About "PERFUME FOR ARABIA"

Since the beginning of time the east and west have argued over brotherhood and philosophy.

The bible documents the arguments and conflict of Cain and Abel. In more recent times conflicts have continued between the brotherhood of humankind.

Some people take the perspective that we are one people existing on a planet which is traveling through space and time.

Many great thinkers suggest there is a need to discover what is good in each of us, to celebrate this and to cooperate, working together for the good
of all humankind.

In New Zealand we are blessed to be far enough away to have a unique view point of the world.

We have no natural enemies and we are one of the youngest nations and the last piece of earth to be occupied by a colony.

Perhaps it is this distance from the problems faced by many nations of the world, that allows New Zealand to think and act differently.

We believe that everyone has the right to a quality of life, to be respected, to be honored and cheerished. New Zealand is a nation in which a people have come from many nations, each to make a better life for themselves and their families. We all came here from somewhere else and so we view ourselves as merely caretakers of this beautiful place.

Then let the thoughts of these words reach you and encourage you.

About "PERUVIA"

In order to find the right answers, we must first ask the right questions.
Perhaps if we begin to find better questions, we will find better answers.

When I consider the history of Peru, I consider the philosophical statement that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing and then to expect a different result. This is accompanied by the statement that if we always do what we have always done, we will always get what we have always got.

So we look to the past civilisations and our heritage to gain an understanding through history.

What does history teach us?

Many civilisations have exerted their will and their ideals against each other and many have used more valuable resources in the conquest of achievement than were available to sustain that civilisation.

It's an interesting thought.

Is it vanity and pride that leads human kind to use more resources than are available in the pursuit of conquest?

Interesting questions.

The most interesting question in my mind is...

"What do the people want?"

I hope that this music inspires you to consider, through the history of Peru, whether conquest is worth it any cost, if there is not enough left to be a victor of.

About "AWAKEN"

I composed "Awaken" one Sunday afternoon upon seeing the plight of NZ dolphins caught up in Japanese Scientific Research ship nets.

I have been fortunate in my lifetime to grow up on West Auckland's surf beaches, Whatipu and Piha. I lived on Waiheke Island for 2 years, swimming long distance every day, often up to 1km off shore. I would swim around the coast from Oneroa to Palm Beach and became attuned to the ocean.

A long distance swimmer "breathes" in the "scent" of the sea. Over the years I noticed that the "taste" of the New Zealand ocean was changing. I could actually smell the pollution increasing in the water.

Not long after, Takapuna and Browns Bay in Auckland temporarily closed the beaches to swimming because of pollution. In many places in New Zealand it has become unsafe to swim because of the toxicity of our ocean water.

As for me, I was only a brief visitor to the ocean and did not live there. I could make the decision to no longer swim in toxic oceans. I could leave. After all, the ocean is not my home.

This is not so for our marine life and dolphins.

In my lifetime I have seen shell fish banned because it is toxic. I have seen swimming banned from beaches.

I wonder... is this ok?

I can not change the world.

I can only change myself.

And so I realise that if I can inspire myself to change, to contribute something positive, then perhaps I can inspire others to also consider what we each can do.

I am using what talents I have to communicate how I feel about the lack of respect our world's leadership has for ensuring our oceans have a future.

And when I walk along a beach, I will pick up rubbish. I will try not to pour chemicals down the drain. I will try to buy ecologically friendly products whenever I can.

and

I will continue to care.

Yulia recorded "Teehaya Noch" (Silent Night) for the Special Edition of her debut album "Into the West" by SONY BMG NZ in 2004 produced by Carl Doy.

Here Yulia contemplates those who struggle at Christmas to experience love and self love and who have challenging circumstances.

Each candle represents the souls and hearts of the people whom Yulia seeks to encourage and uplift with her voice.

No major record label was involved. Just two really hard working and passionate kiwi's. Glyn & Yulia, a lap top computer and an internet connection.

Glyn & Yulia are filming each step of the musical journey and plan to record a documentary film of the recording of the single with David Kershenbaum.

Yulia strongly advocates the NZ National Party and John Key initiatives to fund NZ broadband development. Oikos Music is currently canvassing New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to bring USA Music Producers and Music Publishers / Licensors to NZ to upskill kiwi's on how to develop music specifically for export and to fit formats for tv, film and radio.

Peace Foundation Video "Gandhi Photos"

In this Episode Yulia visits "The Peace Foundation" in Wellington, New Zealand to receive a Gandhi T Shirt from Lachlan MacKay.

Yulia looks at photos from an exhibition presented to the NZ public on Gandhi's birthday. Sadly Gandhi is no longer with us, but his legacy of peace remains.

Lachlan presents Yulia with links to information about messages of peace and shows us some personal favorite photos from the Gandhi exhibition, explaining a little history on the photos.

This ties in with Yulia's "underground instrumental project" ALMS ELECTRONICA www.almselectronica.co.nz "Music with a conscience" which aims to inspire awareness of humanitarian causes and environmental issues.

Yulia sings "The Prayer" at her wedding

On February 10th, 2008 Yulia Townsend married her manager Glyn MacLean in the magnificent historical "Great Hall" at the Christchurch Arts Centre in a fairy tale wedding.

Yulia decided to invite fans to her wedding.

Prime time television documentary channel Television New Zealand's CLOSE UP promoted a special email address for viewer submissions to attend the wedding, along with stories about how Yulia's music had impacted on their lives.

Yulia read through hundreds of submissions from fans all over New Zealand. 168 were finally selected including fans who had suffered life challenges, personal losses and the death of loved ones.

Yulia sang "The Prayer" as a celebration of her marriage union and to send a message of hope to everyone who had suffered or struggled, that they might through prayer, find the hope and faith to overcome.

Possibly one of the most humbling experiences of the wedding was when artist Glenis Thomas presented a beautiful hand made, ornate heirloom piece, a faberge style egg which contained the wedding rings. Yulia keeps this by her bed side and places her wedding an engagement rings in the egg each night as a special keepsake.

A humble pensioner and widower, Glenis used her air points to attend the wedding and put her last savings into the making of the heirloom piece that she hand made for Yulia. This moved Yulia and Glyn to tears.

Fans and sponsors went out of there way to contribute to make this a fairytale wedding. A special link will be placed on www.yulia.co.nz recognising the 168 fans and the sponsors who attended.

Yulia responded to the gift of Glenis Thomas by buying a special Egg Art egg for handcrafted for Glyn's mother and her own mother Galina for mothers day 2008, "Paying it forward".

The relationship with Glenis has blossomed.

"Into the West"

This is the official music video for the title track to Yulia's debut album "Into the West" released in 2004. (Info on Yulia see www.yulia.co.nz)

As a song "Into the West" is a particularly "kiwi" (New Zealand) story.

Walsh, Shore & Lennox penned the song which was first performed by Annie Lenox as part of the film soundtrack to Peter Jackson & Fran Walsh's Blockbuster movie "Lord of The Rings".

Yulia became the first major (signed) artist to cover the song.

This version of "Into the West" became a top 40 hit on mainstream New Zealand radio and continues to receive radio airplay.

The album titled "Into the West", won "Highest Selling Album of the Year" at the 2005 Vodafone NZ Music Awards. New artist Yulia was also awarded "Best Female Vocalist" in the company of the highly accomplished Brooke Fraser and NZ legends The Finn Brothers.

The album "Into the West" achieved platinum and number one album status on the NZ music charts in the first week of sales, remaining number one for four consecutive weeks. The album went on to achieve an official four times platinum sales. (Unofficial figures unconfirmed by SONY BMG).

The album is very popular with Classical, Folk, Opera and Vocal music collectors.

Documentary screened on New Zealand Television the day before the release of Yulia's first album "Into the West" in 2004.

"Into the West" achieved an official four times platinum sales and went platinum in the first week of sales maintaining number one position on the New Zealand album charts for four consecutive weeks.

In 2005, Yulia was awarded "Best Female Vocalist" and "Highest Selling Album of the Year" for "Into the West".
