Nearly 1,200 people (including students between the ages 8 and 15 from 35 different schools from the districts of Kozhikode and Wayanadu with their teachers) assembled at Lakkidi near the Wayanadu gate at 10.00 am. After a small meeting organised by the Coordination Committee of Enviornmental Organisations of Kozhikode and Wayanadu Districts, they all proceeded by foot removing plasic wastes from the road side and planting flowering trees, shrubs, creepers and other plants along the ghut road (12 kms in length and comprising of 9 hairpin bends), safe-guarding the fragile eco-system of this rain forest area in the great Nilgris bio-reserve. Without any doubt it was a invaluable, enjoyable and memorable experience for the participating children and volunteers.

This is the begining of the walk itself. We were hit by a dense patch of fog which brought down the visibility down to almost nil. It was a courageous decision to continue with our walk knowing how busy that stretch of high way normally is. The children really enjoyed their day out and the weather was awesome as you can see from this clip. Hope you all enjoy it.
Cheers,
Kris Kandath Walking through the Ghat road in heavy monsoon rain! tag:ipeace.us,2008-09-10:2217368:Video:42855 2008-09-10T01:58:16.137Z Krishnakumar Sreekandath https://ipeace.us/profile/KrishnakumarSreekandath

Here I am walking through the Ghat road aimlessly in heavy monsoon rain, sheltering under my umbrella somewhere between Lakkidi and adivaram (base area of the mountain pass)in Wayanadu district, Kerala, India. Here is a bit more abbout Keralan monsoon:
Compared to other Indian states, Kerala lies closer to the equator. Yet Kerala is bestowed with a pleasant and equable climate through out the year. This is because of the lands nearness to the sea and the presence of the fort like Western Ghats on the east. Kerala would have been a dry land because of the dry winds blowing from the north, but for the Western Ghats which prevent this wind from entering the land. Kerala receives copious rain (average 3000 mm a year )each year. The temperature normally ranges from 28° to 32° C (82° to 90° F) on the plains but drops to about 20° C (68° F) in the highlands. The Highlands of Kerala, which is an area of major tourist attraction, enjoys a cool and invigorating climate the year-round . Owing to its diversity in geographical features, the climatic condition in Kerala is diverse. It can be divided into 4 seasons - Winter, Summer, South-West Monsoon and North-East Monsoon.
Southwest monsoon is the main rainy season of Kerala. This season ( Edavappathi - as the rains starts by the middle of the Malayalam month Edavam ) begins by the end of May or early June with the outset of the southwest monsoon winds. The next few months are periods of torrential rain. Lying on the windward side of the Western Ghats and being the first state to be hit by the monsoon winds, Kerala receives copious rainfall. Almost 85% of the rain is contributed by the monsoons. The slopes of the Western Ghats are among the places in India which receives the highest amount of rain. Most of the rivers of Kerala are fed by the monsoons. The southwest monsoons lasts till the end of September
Also known as the Retreating Monsoons or the Reverse monsoons, northeast monsoon is during the return of the southwest monsoon winds. These rains ( Thulavarsham - as it rains during the Malayalam month of Thulam) are in the months of October and November and sometimes lasts till December. Heavy afternoon rains accompanied by thunder and lightening is the main characteristic of the season. Days are warm and humid but there is not much variation in temperature.
More about monsoon from- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsoon
Hope you enjoy the rain in Wayanadu.
Cheers,
Kris Our beautiful world which is to be preserved! tag:ipeace.us,2008-09-10:2217368:Video:42840 2008-09-10T01:53:19.251Z Krishnakumar Sreekandath https://ipeace.us/profile/KrishnakumarSreekandath

I was at a homestay near Vythiri, Wayanad recently.
