Justin Theroux reveals the best part of his wedding with Jennifer Aniston

EVEN big Hollywood stars still think Mum knows best.

Newlywed Justin Theroux told news.com.au he took his mother’s advice about the big day last month when he married Jennifer Aniston.

“My mum pointed out to me that there are only two times in life when people say really nice things about you to you. And one of them you’re dead for,” he laughs. “So she said, ‘Enjoy it’. And I did enormously.”

He is also enjoying referring to Aniston as “my wife”.

“It feels very touching. I can’t remember the first time I said those words but it feels fantastic. It’s a comfortable term. I was getting tired of saying fiancee,” he chuckles. “That sounds adorable for about six months and then you go, ‘OK, we got to make some time for this’.”

The couple got engaged in August 2012 and took three years to make it to the altar.

Does Theroux feel differently now that his marital status has changed?

“You know, I feel like I’ve earned it in a way. I appreciate it and I look forward to being good to her. It’s hard to explain but it’s a nice feeling, a settled feeling. It just feels really good.”

Their clandestine wedding was held last month at their Bel Air home in front of 75 guests including Ellen DeGeneres and Sandra Bullock. Reflecting on the experience six weeks later, Theroux is clearly thrilled with the day.

“It went off perfectly, very smoothly. The best part of the wedding is, of course, being able to stand across from someone and say those words. That meant a lot. And to have many of your friends there in support of that, there is something very beautiful about that ritual.”

More handsome in person than on screen, Theroux was speaking with news.com.au while promoting the second season of the TV drama, The Leftovers a show in which much of the world’s population mysteriously vanishes, known as the Sudden Departure.

Now in its second season, the show has shifted from the fictional town of Mapleton to a town in Texas.

“The show feels different. It’s more hopeful and there are a lot of new characters. I’d say more religious themes are explored,” he says.

Dressed in a black fitted suit, white shirt and black skinny tie, he was also wearing an assortment of rings, including the new addition of a thick gold wedding band, and black rubber bracelets around his wrists.

As a collector of tattoos, he considers the hypothetical of what it might be like if he were the father of a 15-year-old who one day surprised him and Aniston with a tattoo. “With tattoos, it’s not a bell that you can un-ring easily. But if they were 15, I’d be pissed.”

Not only a hit on the small screen, Theroux is also dominating Hollywood, co-writing the upcoming film Zoolander 2.

The sequel to the 2001 comedy hit about male modelling, it will again star Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.

“We were shooting in Rome. It was fabulous to be in such a beautiful location and with all that history and then you have these two idiots talking to each other,” he laughs, referring to the characters Derek Zoolander and Hansel.

Having endured life in the public eye since he met Aniston in 2011 on the set ofWanderlust, Theroux explains, “It’s funny. When we first got together I remember thinking, ‘Oh this will be easy. I’m not a bad boy and there’s nothing interesting about me’.” He pauses. “But I was wrong.”

Did his significant other give him any advice?

“I don’t think anyone has any advice because everyone has their own way of dealing with it. I think the best way for me to tolerate it is to realise that the only things that really matter to me are the state of what is happening in my home, the state of what is happening in my work, and the state of what is happening to the people I love. So I don’t pay much attention to it,” he says, shrugging his shoulders. “Otherwise I think I’d be very unhappy.”

Unhappiness is a pervasive theme on The Leftovers. It begs the question, with such a high profile lifestyle, does Theroux ever feel the desire to disappear?

“Are you kidding? I love my life. I don’t want to vanish at all.”
