More than 90 people are rescued alive in Haiti

Geneva, 19 jan (EFE) .- Rescuers working in devastated Haiti could take more than 90 people alive under the rubble from the earthquake a week ago, today said a UN source.

Elizabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) UN, increased, thus the number of people found alive after remaining under the destroyed buildings, which was 71 people.

Rescue efforts are attended by 43 teams from around the world, which have more than 1.7 thousand members and 161 trained dogs.

The earthquake of 7 on the Richter scale occurred at 19:53 (GMT) on Tuesday morning and the epicenter was 15 kilometers from the Haitian capital, Port au Prince. According to statements Efe, the Prime Minister of Haiti, Jean Max Bellerive, believes that the death toll will exceed 100 thousand.

The Brazilian army reported that at least 17 soldiers of the country that participated in the mission of the United Nations Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH) were killed by the earthquake.

Dr Zilda Arns, founder and coordinator of the Pastoral of the Child, and Luiz Carlos da Costa, the second highest civilian in the hierarchy of the UN in Haiti, also died in the quake.

A week after the earthquake, Haiti has hunger, thirst and counts its dead
A devastated Haiti, thousands of people hungry and countless dead, buried and awaiting burial, is the balance, a week later, the earthquake of 7 on the Richter scale which struck Haiti on Tuesday (12).

Humanitarian aid began to arrive in Port au Prince, although it is still insufficient. Much of the population still wanders the streets in search of food and water.
Agglomerations are formed in places with the possibility of finding something to drink. Given the virtual absence of public services, yet insufficient assistance from other countries and the delay in getting food, they worry that people will rebel and start a wave of violence.

For the city, and barren areas in the markets, people focus on fear of a quake. Low intensity tremors are felt at every moment which increases the feeling of fear.

Infections and health problems after the earthquake should cause thousands of deaths by at least one year between the various homeless in Haiti, said experts consulted by UOL News. Initial estimates of the President of the Caribbean country show up to 50 thousand victims in the disaster.
The distribution of food, for example, has been hampered because the food stores of the World Food Program (WFP) - arm of the UN - in Haiti were looted, according to a spokesman for the United Nations. "We were robbed. We must replenish our warehouses," said Emilia Casella, adding that such situations are predictable in disaster situations.

Military casualties in Haiti report moments of terror after the earthquake

The beginning of the tragedy has time and place: 16:53 (19:53 GMT on), the epicenter 15 kilometers from the capital. But the damage went beyond the boundaries of the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, now 1.5 million displaced, half of its population.

Among the dead foreigners from at least 25 nationalities and 19 Brazilians. Among them, the medical Zilda Arns, founder and coordinator of the Pastoral of the Child, and Luiz Carlos da Costa, the second highest civilian hierarchy in the United Nations (UN) in Haiti and Brazil's highest office in the organization.

First independent country in Latin America, Haiti now depends on international mobilization started soon after the quake. The aid, however, faces a logistical barrier-the difficulty of distributing food and water to thousands scattered in makeshift sleeping outside, in a landscape of rubble and rotting corpses.

If the estimate of the Haitian government goes ahead, will be 200 people dead that will put the tragedy of the ten worst in history. Today, the WHO (World Health Organization) believes in 100 deaths. About 70 thousand bodies were buried in mass graves until this Monday (18).

In an attempt to recover, which should take years, Brazil has an important role. Leads the troops of the mission of UN peacekeepers in the country, with 1266 military-figure that could double, according to the Army to help rebuild the country. MINUSTAH, as it is called the UN mission in Haiti, has contingent of about 9,000 people, slightly more than 7,000 of them military.
Help in short term and elections to the future, argues analyst for Haiti
For Julia Schünemann, Haiti is to achieve some level of social and political stability, if international aid is able to simultaneously produce concrete results in the short term and have a vision of the future

Amid the chaos, scenes of hope. One group, which was part of a boy of seven, survived 120 hours under the rubble of a supermarket. Adds up to about 70 people pulled alive from the remnants of the buildings torn down, even after days underground.

But the consequences of the earthquake beyond the destruction of wealth in a country with high rates of diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. For doctors in Haiti, the worst is yet to come. Infections resulting from the delay in burying the dead and help the wounded in a country of malnourished children, where health was a challenge, can cause one of the worst medical disasters in history.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States, provides for outbreaks of infectious diseases. "There are varieties of diseases typical here, but certainly there's worse after a disaster like es

Why the earthquake hit Haiti so hard?
Ute Braun: For years the country is highly unstable, both in its political structures and in its infrastructure. In addition, Haiti imports 50% of their food, despite being an agricultural country. The poverty of Haiti is mainly due to high population density and because their forests have been cleared. This means that the environmental disasters that have afflicted Haiti for years, such as floods and cyclones, have an especially devastating.

SPIEGEL: And the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, which was devastated by the earthquake, is particularly over-populated.
Ute Braun: Yes, it is believed that 3 million people live in Port-au-Prince. In recent years, people left the countryside and moved to the city. However, the urban infrastructure was designed for far fewer people. The place is simply too full. The result is that people live on steep slopes and canyons.
Spiegel Online: What would be the worst scenario for Haiti?
Ute Braun: It can happen that Port-au-Prince becomes totally uncontrollable. It is entirely possible that the town suffers with looting and lawlessness, partly born of necessity. What aggravates the country's problems is that not only the poorest people was hit by the earthquake, but also political institutions and groups theoretically responsible for disaster response. I think this will be a great shock to the Haitian people.
Spiegel Online: What should be the priority for emergency response in Haiti?
Ute Braun: It is essential that aid is already being used on a large scale remains the long term. Humanitarian efforts can not stop after four weeks, even after four months. Right now, of course, the most important thing is to start with the essentials for survival. Then, the next step, go for rebuilding. Yet it is highly important to offer hope to the Haitian people. Living conditions should improve gradually to ensure that future disasters do not have as devastating an impact as now.

Amid the destruction and chaos, the Internet turned out to be the only service that worked more or less continuously in Haiti after the earthquake. The network served as a link between a country devastated and the world.

Thanks to the web that Haitians were able to disclose the first pictures of the tragedy, which later fueled all international news agencies and therefore the mainstream media.

At the same time, reports were published on social networks (Facebook was trading off the air because of the amount of hits). As usual in large-scale tragedies, Twitter centralized updating breaking news and served, initially, that they knew what had happened in several cities.

Maintaining virtually intact Internet service in Haiti (there were several moments of slowness, but he was never suspended) has an explanation: no infrastructure, the country does not have cable connections, and most access takes place via satellite.

The earthquake revealed the importance of mobile devices not only in the news aspect, but also to expedite requests for help. Citizens (many were also professional journalists) have been able to distribute content (text, pictures and videos) through mobile phones.

Several of them made statements to foreign media via webcam and instant communicators, making a report without filters on the destruction.

It was also on the web that the first initiatives of humanitarian aid to victims. The Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean has mobilized volunteers, and its NGOs, Yele, became the term most used on Twitter.

The telephone network had several crashes yesterday and ran poorly, but helped the authorities locate a Canadian citizen arrested under the rubble of a building in the capital, Port au Prince, because he managed to send an SMS (the "torpedo") with a friend in Ottawa.

The lack of electricity produced a hole in citizen coverage of the tragedy, as in laptops and cell phones that were no battery - no way to load them. planes of the FAB (Brazilian Air Force) took off early on Friday of the Galeao Air Base in Rio de Janeiro, with a field hospital and medical staff to help victims of the earthquake of 7 magnitude which devastated the capital of Haiti, Port au Prince, on Tuesday (12) and left thousands dead - including 17 Brazilians.

The aircraft - which should leave late on Thursday - took the Hospital Campaign (hcampos) FAB, 50 military health care, including physicians and nurses, and equipment for the operating room, intensive care unit ( ICU), X-ray, laboratory and modules for outpatient care.

The hcampos is a mobile hospital, used for short period of hospitalization and designed to meet injured in combat. It is composed of air-conditioned tents that can be assembled in various configurations, depending on need.

In Haiti, the unit is in its full configuration, with additional modules for short period of hospitalization, in addition to serving the outpatient. The hcampos will serve as emergency care, including surgery and care for critically ill patients

ajuda humanitária começou a chegar a Porto Príncipe, embora ainda seja insuficiente.

Humanitarian aid began to arrive in Port au Prince, although it is still insufficient. Much of the population still wanders the streets in search of food and water.
The United States Army began playing relief supplies to Haiti by air.

The operation launched some 14 billion ready meals and 15 thousand liters of drinking water to the northwest of Port au Prince.

The delivery was made even after the secretary of the United States Defense Secretary Robert Gates had written off the possibility of throwing food from aircraft, saying it could create unrest.

The U.S. military is now investigating the possibility of expanding the delivery of aid by air to other parts of Haiti. After the earthquake, Haiti has to deal with its thousands of orphans

A baby of 5 months who is detained in an Israeli hospital in Port au Prince has a number instead of a name. Now doctors have a difficult decision ahead. "What we do with it when the treatment is finished?" Said Dr. Amit Assa, the pediatric emergency department of the Israeli hospital. Nobody knows who is the family of the boy and his parents are alive.

According to data from international aid groups, and this baby, tens of thousands of children orphaned after the earthquake in Port au Prince. Are such that experts do not venture to speak in numbers. "With so many buildings destroyed and the steady growth of violence, it is true that many children are alone in the streets," said Elizabeth Rodgers, the British group SOS Children.

On Tuesday, however, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned that the orphans should be adopted abroad only as a last resort. UNICEF is trying to identify and register unaccompanied children who wander the chaotic streets of the capital.

A spokesman for Unicef, Veronique Taveau, said the agency fears the occurrence of child trafficking. "UNICEF's position has always been that, whatever the humanitarian situation, family reunification should be encouraged," said Taveau told a news conference.

"If parents are dead or missing, efforts should be made to bring the child to the rest of his family, including grandparents," she said. A child must "stay as far as possible in their country of birth. The last feature is the inter-country adoption," he said.

O último recurso é a adoção inter-países".

A baby of 5 months who is detained in an Israeli hospital in Port au Prince has a number instead of a name. No member of the rescue team knows who left the child at the makeshift medical center after removing it from the rubble of a building, four days after the earthquake that devastated the Haitian capital.
