TORONTO -- The 2012 season been a learning experience for Brett Lawrie. Paul Verhaegh World Cup Jersey . The Toronto Blue Jays third baseman doubled home the tying run in the eighth inning against the Boston Red Sox 5-5 on Friday, but the 22-year-old from Langley, B.C., was thrown out at third on a ground ball to short for the second out of the inning that blunted the rally. It was another baserunning error by Lawrie in a season that has seen plenty of them, and it helped the Red Sox get out of the inning, setting up Mauro Gomezs two-run triple in a three-run ninth as Boston downed Toronto 8-5. Ryan Lavarnway also had a sacrifice fly in the ninth to go with a three-run homer for a four-RBI game. "Over aggressive, tried to force it, plays in front of him," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said of Lawrie. "Hes got to hold his ground right there." Lawrie also was involved in another big play earlier in the game. With two out in the fifth inning, instead of going to first on a ground ball by Gomez, he tried to tag the runner Mike Aviles, who put a spin move on him and was safe at third. "How about that move?" Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine asked. "I dont think he was out of the baseline. ... Mike didnt give up, he gave everything he had to avoid the tag and he did." After Lavernway was walked by Chad Jenkins, Daniel Nava singled in two runs to put Boston into a 5-3 lead. The inning could have ended if Lawrie had taken the easy out by throwing to first. "Easy to say Yes in hindsight," Farrell said. "Thats a routine ground ball out with a below average runner at the plate in Gomez. So yeah, you can sit here and say that the routine out is to execute at first base. "He chose to try and tag him, avoid the throw, Aviles avoids the tag. To me it looked like he went outside the established baseline but the call stood as it was." Added Lawrie: "I went to go tag him and he just, I dont know. ... Ive got to watch the replay because as far as Im concerned he was out of the baseline from what I saw. I didnt tag him, he got around me, just an unfortunate lucky break." But the throw to first was his first instinct. "Obviously, Lawrie said. "But out of the corner of my eye he was running full speed at me so I figured I could just go tag him and just run to the dugout. I wasnt thinking about it too much." The Blue Jays would come back to tie the game, but the Red Sox won it against two of Torontos top relievers. Jacoby Ellsbury led off the ninth with a single off Darren Oliver (3-3) who was replaced by Casey Janssen. Cody Ross then singled to left with one out before Gomez tripled to the gap in right centre to put the Red Sox into a 7-5 lead. "Mauro is a pretty good hitter," Valentine said. "He has been playing a lot against left-handers, but I left him in against a right-hander there and he didnt try to do too much. He took a slider into right-centre field that I thought was caught for a second." Lavarnway then added a sacrifice fly to score Gomez from third as the Red Sox snapped a six-game losing streak against Toronto. Reliever Chris Carpenter (1-0) entered the game in the eighth inning and got the win. Andrew Bailey pitched the ninth for his third save. Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka held the Blue Jays to three hits, but allowed four runs in 5 1-3 innings. He gave up three walks, hit a batter and had two wild pitches that scored runs. Toronto left-hander Aaron Laffey lasted just 3 2-3 innings, allowing three runs and four hits, including Lavarnways fourth-inning homer to tie the game 3-3. The Blue Jays (65-78) scored three runs in the third, two on wild pitches by Matsuzaka. Moises Sierra started the inning when he was hit by a pitch before Anthony Gose and Colby Rasmus walked. With the bases loaded, Sierra scored on the first wild pitch and the other runners moved to second and third. Lawrie then walked on the second wild pitch, which scored Gose from third. Rasmus then came home when Lind grounded out to second after the attempt to force Lawrie at second failed. Given a 3-0 lead, Laffey gave it all back in the fourth. Ross led off with a walk, Gomez singled and Lavarnway hit his second homer of the season. Laffey got two outs but gave up his third walk of the game and was replaced by Jenkins. Nava hit a two-run, two-out single in the fifth to put Boston (65-80) into a 5-3 lead. Aviles hit a one-out single and took second on Ross groundout. After Aviles avoided Lawries tag for what would have been the third out, Lavarnway walked to load the bases and Nava singled to right. The Blue Jays pulled to within one run in the sixth when Lind tripled with one out and Clayton Mortensen, who replaced Matsuzaka, gave up a single to Yunel Escobar. Rasmus led off the eighth with a single against Vicente Padilla. Lawrie followed with a double to tie the game 5-5 before Lind lined to left where Nava made a diving catch and nearly caught Lawrie at second for a double play. "Off the bat I thought it was in the gap so I was heading that way," Nava said. "It kind of came back. I think instincts took over. I didnt think I was going to have to dive for it, it just happened. It worked out and it meant a lot to keep that guy from scoring." After Carpenter replaced Padilla, Escobar grounded to shortstop but Lawrie was thrown out at third on a baserunning mistake. Escobar went to second on a wild pitch and Kelly Johnson was walked intentionally but J.P. Arencibia fly to centre to end the threat. "You start with Daniel Nava," Valentine said. "I dont know if we have a chance without making a spectacular catch, saving the game and getting the bases-loaded base hit to put us ahead the first time." Notes: Blue Jays first baseman Edwin Encarnacion was not in the starting lineup Fafter being hit by a pitch on the wrist in Thursdays 8-3 win over Seattle. ... Blue Jays pitching coach Bruce Walton was back with a bruised right arm after being hit by the barrel of a broken bat in the first inning of Thursdays game. Walton was able to get both arms up when Encarnacions bat shattered on a groundout with the barrel flying into the dugout. ... Left-hander J.A. Happ had successful surgery Thursday on his fractured right foot. ... Jason Frasor made his 500th career appearance as a Blue Jay when he entered the game in the sixth. ... The Blue Jays will send Carlos Villanueva (7-5, 3.58 earned-run average) to the mound Saturday against Bostons Clay Buchholz (11-6, 4.46 ERA). ... Boy, did they deliver one Sunday to the defending Super Bowl champions. JOLIET, Ill. -- With James Bueschers truck losing power in the first half of the race, his crew made a quick decision: Theyd have to come into the pits and replace their carburetor, even if cost them a few laps to the leaders. The decision left Bueschers crew under pressure to complete a less-than-routine repair that involved removing and reinstalling several small parts -- all while wearing gloves to avoid burning their hands on a scalding hot engine. But they got it done in just a matter of minutes and Buescher did the rest, coming from two laps down to win the NASCAR Truck Series race at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday night. Buescher figured at the time that the long stop would have cost him a shot at the win. "I didnt know if the carburetor was going to be a fix or not," Buescher said. "I was hoping it was. Luckily it was. From that point on, the goal was to get back on the lead lap and get as many spots as we could. As quick as we were able to get back on the lead lap, the goals changed pretty quickly, knowing how good our truck was." Crew chief Michael Shelton saluted the skill of his crew -- he said he expected to lose three laps to the leaders during the carburetor change, and they only lost two. "As hot as it is under that hood, and youre pulling some small parts there, with gloves," Shelton said. "Its hard. Youve got to slow yourself down and just do your job, and they did it perfectly." Buescher took the lead from Timothy Peters on the last lap, then held off a charge from Brendan Gaughan to win. It was Bueschers third career win, with all three coming this season. Buescher previously won at Kansas and Kentucky. Gaughan finished second after dominating the majority of the race. Peters was third, followed by Matt Crafton and Parker Kligerman. It was the 200th career start in Trucks for Todd Bodine, making him the only driver with at least 200 starts in all three of NASCARs national series. Bodine finished 18th. Buescher and Peters went side-by-side on the final restart with two laps to go, and Buescher took the lead on the last lap. Gaughan surged to second but couldnt catch Buescher. "He never gives up," Shelton said. "He has the motivation on his own." Peters leads Ty Dillon by 23 points in the series standings. Dillonn finished 12th. Daley Blind World Cup Jersey. Peters had to start Saturdays race at the back of the pack after his team made an engine change. "Tonight was very good," Peters said. "Im proud of the team. This team is very good at overcoming adversity." Ron Hornaday Jr. slid sideways across the finish line, but still managed to finish seventh. Gaughan led a race-high 83 laps and appeared to be in good position to win at the end, but he spun his tires on the second-to-last restart. "Second place looks like itd be fantastic, but not when you have a truck that good," Gaughan said. Gaughan dominated the early stages of the race, giving up the lead when he made a green-flag pit stop on lap 48 but quickly regaining it. A spin by Chris Fontaine brought out a caution, allowing the leaders to make a final round of pit stops with 50 laps to go. Gaughan lost the lead, taking four tires during his pit stop and falling back to sixth on the restart as Joey Coulter took the lead. But Coulter fell back on the restart, then hit the wall and spun out to bring out another caution a few laps later. Dillon then took the lead from Justin Lofton on lap 118, with Gaughan taking second. Peters eventually moved up to third and caught the leaders with 20 laps to go. Dillon then appeared to brush the wall, allowing Gaughan to slip past and take the lead with Peters moving up to second. Then a caution came out with 15 laps to go, bunching up the field for a restart with nine laps to go. Gaughan appeared to spin his tires on the restart, allowing Peters to edge ahead -- then Gaughan got loose later in the lap, losing a few spots. "There was no truck out there that was going to beat (us), unless we beat ourselves," Gaughan said. "And I did -- I spun my tires on (the restart), I gave an opening, and thats what you cant do." Buescher passed Peters for the lead with seven to go, but a caution came out to set up the final restart. To get to that point, Buescher acknowledged he had to make a few risky moves to make up ground after the carburetor change. "I cleared the guys but a lot of them probably could have ended up in some crashes," Buescher said. "But I had to pass 20-some odd truck in less than 40 laps, and if you wait too long, they get strung out." ' ' '
