In another warning to marketers, federal regulators are sending out refund checks totaling $9.3 million tied to a fitness company accused of deceptive advertising.
Nearly 200,000 checks are being mailed out to consumers duped by the ads, according to the Federal Trade Commission, a regulatory agency. The average check is for about $47.51.
The refunds stem from a 2012 settlement between the FTC and Ab Circle Pro marketers Fitness Brands, along with other affiliated people and companies. The federal agency accused them of deceptively advertising that exercising on the device for just three minutes a day would cause consumers to lose 10 pounds in two weeks.
This is the latest of several recent cases where regulators have pursued businesses for advertising campaigns that have led to costly settlements. Here's some of the recent stories, including the BrainStrong dietary supplement and the "happy, horny, skinny pill" ad campaigns.
