As big fans of all things ballet, we’re always happy to see fashion and dance come together—we’re even happy to do it ourselves. So we were thrilled to hear that the New York City Ballet has tapped a stunning roster of some of our favorite fashion designers to create costumes this season: Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton, Carolina Herrera, Valentino, Mary Katrantzou, and Thom Browne. If there is a group of designers who perfectly marry beauty with theatricality, this is certainly it.

The costumes will debut in action at the NYCB’s opening gala on September 23rd, and according to Fashionista, each designer has been paired up with a choreographer: Liam Scarlett will work with Sarah Burton, Tiler Peck will work with Katrantzou, Troy Schumaker with Browne, and Peter Martins with Carolina Herrera. Valentino Garavani will design the costumes for a pre-existing piece from Christopher Wheeldon.
The NYCB has had a rapport with the high fashion world for a few years now, first working with Rodarte in 2012, followed by Prabal Gurung, Iris van Herpen, and Olivier Theyskens in 2013. But this is certainly the most high-profile and extensive group ever, and we can’t wait to see what the opening gala on September 23rd brings—though we know it will be, in a word, stunning.
