No practice, no money, no uniforms, no sneakers and 24 hours of travel - it's fair to say Gapuwiyak's under-14 basketball team has jumped through a lot of hoops just to get to the Australian Schools Championships in the ACT in the past week

Gapuwiyak is a small town of about 1000 people, in the far north-west of Arnhem Land at the top of Australia - a three-hour drive from the nearest airport, Gove, in a four-wheel-drive.
The television program Sunrise heard about the team's desperate need for funding in August, which led to the Australian Sports Commission providing about $10,000 - pretty handy when flights alone were $1300 per person.
Manufacturers AND1 provided uniforms and shoes and they were on their way.
But a couple of indigenous ceremonies meant none of the team could practice in the lead-up to the tournament

Even the style of play in the nation's capital was foreign to the nine girls from the Northern Territory - they play a freer version of basketball. No structures, no zones, just a free-running game with lots of tricks.
