PESHAWAR, May 14: The US-led war on terror has adversely affected the health delivery system in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), officials said. “Several doctors and health professionals have got themselves transferred from Fata because of the looming danger there,” said a health official. According to him, a senior physician was badly injured in an attack in South Waziristan Agency recently.

He said the hospitals in Fata were facing constant threat of US air strikes and attacks by Taliban, due to which most of the health staff felt extremely insecure.

Since the war on terror began, the number of patients has dropped as most of the people prefer to go to the hospitals in the districts adjacent to Fata or in Peshawar.

“We live very close to the agency headquarters hospital in Miramshah but due to the non-availability of doctors and staff, we brought our brother here,” said Amjad Ali and Wajid Ali, whose brother Sajid Ali was operated upon for appendectomy at the Khyber Teaching Hospital a couple of days ago.

Recently, Fata Health Director-General Dr Zubair Khan told a meeting of all the agency surgeons in Peshawar to raise the rate of admission and OPDs in their respective areas.

Officials said that before the launch of the war on terrorism, even patients from Afghanistan came to Fata for treatment.

But now the situation had changed.

They also pointed out that Bajaur Agency Surgeon Dr Abdul Ghani Khan, who had gone to attend a meeting to promote anti-polio campaign, was killed and three health officials injured in a bomb explosion on Feb 15.

One of the health workers accompanying him died later at the Lady Reading Hospital.

Sources said that the health workers were not ready to be posted in the troubled spots of Fata, which was adversely affecting the health care system.

They said the anti-polio campaign has also been severely affected.
