EVERYONE loves cakes and sweets. Or do they? In China for example, their sweets are not sweet to our tastes. In fact, I don't think they use sugar in them. May be wrong, but what I ate was not sweet, just barely.
This is a delicious sweet pasta they make here in Umbria, Italy. It is made with pasta, cacao, chopped nuts, pinenuts, sugar...and I don't know the rest. Ah yes, the liquore is called Alchemins.
And my mother-in-law makes it and it is delicious. It's made around Christmas time.

Mince Pies and Lotti

Mince Pies Pictures, Images and Photos

Lotti was Spike's daughter (for the "old" members of the group you might remember Spike... my wonder dog). She was a Weimaraner. Her nick name was Biffa (Biffa is a waste disposal company in the UK) so you can probably guess that Lotti was a bit of a glutton.

She would raid the kitchen bin on a regular basis, but instead of devouring her spoils straight away she would come into the lounge with her booty and would look totally bewildered when she got told off and whatever she had in her mouth taken off her.

She was a brilliant floor mop too, if ever anything was spilt on the floor she would be there like a rocket licking it up... not a trace of the spillage would be left.

It was Christmas day, well over ten years ago now. All my immediate family always came to my house for Christmas. My mother would usually bring something she had baked, most of the time it would be mince pies. She always claimed that her mince pies were the best that had ever been made! This particular year my daughter had decided to make some of her own, she must have been about 9 years old at the time. She made the mincemeat (vegan) and the pastry, they were truly made from scratch. My mothers were always made from bought mincemeat, but she always made her own pastry.

My mother is a very competitive person, so even felt the need to compete with her own Granddaughter over who made the best mince pies that year. No one wanted to speak their mind incase it upset anyone, so Lotti was given the task of deciding which one she preferred.

To tell the truth I thought that Lotti would just gobble them both up without even bothering to chew and we could declare a draw... well I was very much mistaken. Lotti was offered one of my Mothers pies first, she sniffed it and refused to eat it.... we were all stunned. My Mother immediately spoke up and announced that dogs don't like mincemeat and that was why Lotti would not eat her pie. Lotti was then offered one of Sophie's pies... she took it and ate it up in a flash.

My Mother then had to have a quick rethink..... she said that it was because her ingredients were too rich for Lotti and that was why she did not want hers........ the whole table full of guests looked at each other with wry smiles.
