AYURVEDA

Some of the friends asked me about the DOSHAs in our body and what exactly they are ? This is my humble effort to make them aware and also to write about the origin of Ayurveda for friends who might like to know.

In Sanskrit : "AYU" means “ LIFE “ and "VEDA" means “KNOWLEDGE” .

Let us try to understand what LIFE means as per AYURVEDA. "AYU" is defined as “Soul, Mind, Body and Senses (SMBS)

Ayurveda is more than 5,000-year-old Vedic healing system from India. Thanks to able YOGI’s and learned people who took made efforts to make people aware, and now it is we can see the widespread existence. It is also seen that health-conscious individuals all over the world are taking more accountability for their own health and well-being.

The old saying "prevention is better than cure" now makes more sense in a time when health-care is becoming exorbitantly expensive and the risks of dangerous side effects of drugs that more often lead to greater issues instead of treating the illness in question.

This has one of the important reasons that people all over the world are now exploring alternative health systems such as Ayurveda which helps to lead a healthy life and CHECK disease before it ever has a chance to take root in the physiology. WORLD now has more than one choice to live healthy than before as people are now more AWARE.

ORIGIN OF AYURVEDA

As per Vedic Hindu mythology, the " Science Of Life " was first entailed by Lord Brahma, who is considered to be the Creator, in the Brahma Samhita. It is said that , Rishi( Sage) Sri Bharadwaj went to GODS to learn and gain the the knowledge , how to to fight with illness / sickness prevailing on earth.

Rishi Bharadwaj studied Ayurveda from Indra, who is considered to be the King of Gods and returned to earth to share and spread Ayurveda .He then transferred the knowledge and taught several other Rishi’s who were then assigned to pass it forward.

Rishi Charaka and Rishi Sushruta then transcripted principles;methods;formulas of AYURVEDA in to text form and that is how the knowledge of Ayurveda was preserved and spread. Initially Ayurvedic Practice experts were known as VAIDYAS (the then practicing Doctors). For ages Ayurveda could not flourish as it was suppressed during the Mogul & British regime.

In modern time , it will not be out of place to mention that Baba Ramdev from India, emerged as a True Ambassador and a strong pillar to spread world wide the importance of YOGA and Ayurvedic approach.

AYURVEDA IS ALSO A HOLISTIC APPROACH FOR HEALING

Ayurveda is based on the principles of wholeness and balance. Ayurveda suggests healing and treating the AYU( Soul; Body; Mind & Senses) emotions and spirit instead of addressing “One Cause – One Treatment”.

It is like nourishing with water & appropriate food to the roots to have healthy plant. Appropriate diet / routine / life style and sleep are as important for internal cleansing as the use of healthy food habits.

KEY to health is BALANCE : Balancing these three DOSHAs – VATA – PITTA – KAPHA is the living HEALTHY

VATA governs all functions of mind and body. Blood flow, breathing and the movement of thoughts across the mind and release of wastes are governed by VATA. VATA is also considered to be the LEADER as Pitta and Kapha cannot move without the movement of Vata.

PITTA governs functions metabolism and heat in the body, and manages all biochemical reactions and the process of energy exchange. Such as Pitta controls the functions as to how we digest foods, how we metabolize our sensory perceptions, and how we differentiate between right and not so right. Pitta governs the "Agni" the fires of the body.

KAPHA manages the structure and cohesion of the organism. It governs biological strength, natural tissue resistance, and proper body structure, lubrication in the mind and body. Kapha is the controlling factor of weight, growth, joint / ligament lubrication and lungs. Kapha also is responsible for the formation of all the seven important tissues : Fat ; Blood ; Nutritive Fluids ; Muscles ; Bone; Bone Marrow and Reproductive Tissues.

There are Sub doshas of each which I will address in my next submission. However, I will be glad to assist with answer to the best of my ability and study. I am positive that many of our friends are very knowledgeable and will be able to add more to this contribution.
