I am continually fascinated (and some times astounded) by what I see in the western governments elected by various societies. Lately I have felt that logic exists only to be defied. For example:

1-In my country (U.S.) congress finally passed a bill to provide a modicum of consumer protection in the credit card laws. BUT------passed it only with an attachment that makes it legal to take guns into national parks. As the world knows American needs to carry more guns-------------in Texas a law was passed to allow teachers to carry guns into schools.

2-In England member of the parliment apparently have felt the need to charge the government for such things as cleaning algae out of personal moats, covering the cost of a Red Bull drink for a member, all manner of repairs to personal homes, and even paying the mortgage payments for the home of the daughter of the member of Parliment. (though in this case the member insists it was simply a mistake....................that had gone on for years.) Additionally, one member was trepaid mortgage [payments for a home that he had sold some time before.................sound like the old trick of collecting social security payments even though the recipient had been dead for some years.

3-France has one of the best--------------a law that forbids the charging and prosecution of the president for any wrongdoing until the president is no longer in office. Richard Nixon would have payed for a law like that. Now-the ex-president, it seems, will be charged for his illegal activities at this much later date. Or not------------the investigation continues.

4-Italy always brings a smile, after all Italy has Berlesconi..............controls all of the media as he owns most of it. The man simply cannot be convicted for any wrongdoing.........just keeps getting voted out and back in. As well, he seems to prefer governing in a soap opera bubble (as I refer to his penchant for publicity for his antics.) Guess the ego must be fed by any means.

5-Back to the U.S...............we apparently decided that, with the rare exception of President Obama, we prefer to have people in government that are incapable of intellect. Witness the fact that Sarah Palin was not only a V.P candidate but now has a committee to raise money to "explore" a run in 2012. I swear to god I keep seeing bumper stickers denoting "Palin in 2012.) What really defies belief is that people are giving money to her. This makes me feel I should apologize to the rest of the world for the brain farts that we Americans cannot save ourselves from having.

So, while the governments of the west try to not be afraid of the Chinese refusing to finance their respective national debts, or lock them out of the Chinese market----they stumble along seemingly more secure in the lack of intelligence of the populace that keeps putting them into office...

Thomas Jefferson speculated that a revolution every twenty years may be what is needed to keep a government honest.and competent. Maybe, just maybe he was right.
Maybe peace will always be unobtainable thought I refuse to believe that is so.
But----------with Sarah Palin, guns in national parks and in schools, Bersleconi, and England's parliment, one never knows.
