On June 16th the Israeli newspaper Haaretz printed a story I had to double and tripple check to see if it was real. When ex US president Jimmy Carter was in Gaza on a Middle east tour in June, two IED's (improvised explosive devices) were planted on the route Carters motorcade would take. A bold attempt of assasination. The bombs were placed by "Al qaeda backed militants". Residents in the area saw Hamass police carry out controlled explosions on the devices.
You would think that such an act would be spread across the news, but since only months ago we were seeing Hamass being called terrorists and savages, to paint them as "saviours" in an assasination attempt on an ex US president might get rid of the "terrorist" label would be crippling to Israels stance on the elected government of Gaza.
But even stranger is Hamass have denied the claims since I imagine they don't want to seem sympathetic to the "imperial US" and might have escaped becoming scapegoats for the bombing themselves. so my question is, were they helping Carter or helping themselves by stopping the bombs ?
But regardless of their motives or even the motives of the would be bombers, shouldn't this be on the news ? If somebbody took a shot at Bush or planted a bomb targeting him, it would be front page. But poor old Jimmy Carter doesn't deserve it. After his heartfelt speech to the Palestinian people about their plight while condeming rocket attacks from Palestinian groups into Isreal, people were planning his death instead of listening to his words.
