Do You Know About International School Peace Gardens? Would You Like To Share Your Thoughts On Any School, Community, Or City, Peace Garden ?

A Peace Garden is a thoughtful and positive addition to any school!
Peace Gardens within schools are usually ongoing projects
taking shape over a period of time.
KIND CLASSES" would appreciate hearing about
any school 's Peace Garden or any Peace Garden!

Some Canadian schools and schools throughout the world
are registered as International School Peace Gardens.

International School Peace Gardens or ISPG initiatives
encourage conflict resolution
and promote peace with oneself, with others, and with nature.
The garden and those who create it become symbols of hope and peace.
International School Peace Gardens are a part
of a broader school curriculum program to sustain well
our world and its people.
Friendship Benches and Dream Benches can be
features of International School Peace Gardens.
The Friendship Bench is there for any student who is having a problem.
If a student sits on the Friendship Bench,
two other students are supposed to immediately join them to support them.
The Dream Bench is for brain storming to find peaceful solutions to problems.
If nothing else, those benches are symbols of hope.
TSPG's aren't the ultimate cure to all school conflict but their presence alone sends a powerful message. Some students may not want to ever sit on a Friendship Bench and have other students approach them
- either out of fear or uncertainty, etc. The ISPG though still will represent a tiny piece of calm in their chaotic world. Sometimes students literally feel that they have to escape the walls of the classroom. They just want to get out - both in a literal and a symbolic sense. Some students with special needs have breaks wrttten into their routine. A International School Peace Garden seems like
a perfect spot for a restorative moment!
As a member of the International School Peace Garden program,
your school can register and connect with other schools
and learn about their ISPG's.

The eternal flame symbolizies hope.
A source of light and the "damaged roof" feature

The damaged roof represents
conflict and man's fraility.
School conflict can result in frail spirits
but yet we are not without hope!

I would like to add two more Peace Gardens to this list.

I would like to draw your attention today to
Hiroshima's Memorial Peace Garden
and its Children's Peace Monument
and the related Paper Crane Peace project!

The Children's Peace Monument came to being because of one little sick girl and a horrific act of war.Sadako Sasaki died at the age of 12 after contracting leukemia as a result of the Hiroshima bombing. While she was sick with leukemia, she started the task of creating 1000 paper cranes. Japanese custom says that you will receive your wish if you make 1000 cranes. Sadako died before she could complete your task. Her classmates, however, continued her dream and also asked for a monument to be built in memory of all children who lost their lives because of the atomic bomb. Thus - the Children's Peace Monument - a symbol of peace! The paper crane and Sadako's story is still part of many peace initiatives. 10 million paper cranes are placedat the Children's Peace Monument each year!

Anyone, anywhere can send paper cranes to be displayed at this monument.
You can download a registration form
and get the address to send your paper cranes
@ http://www.city.hiroshima.jp/shimin/heiwa/crane.html

You can also send a message of peace
and your name and message will be entered into
the Paper Crane Database.
You can read the names and messages of peace in the database
@ http://www.city.hiroshima.jp/shimin/heiwa/cranedatabase.html
The database has now being updated as far as April 2008.

If anyone ever visited Hiroshima's Memorial Peace Garden
or has any thoughts or experiences related to
the Children's Peace Monument or the Paper Crane Peace Project,
then I value your contribution!
