A Peace Garden is a thoughtful and positive addition to any school!
Peace Gardens within schools are usually ongoing projects
taking shape over a period of time.
KIND CLASSES" would appreciate hearing about
any school 's Peace Garden or any Peace Garden!
Some Canadian schools and schools throughout the world
are registered as International School Peace Gardens.
International School Peace Gardens or ISPG initiatives
encourage conflict resolution
and promote peace with oneself, with others, and with nature.
The garden and those who create it become symbols of hope and peace.
International School Peace Gardens are a part
of a broader school curriculum program to sustain well
our world and its people.
Friendship Benches and Dream Benches can be
features of International School Peace Gardens.
The Friendship Bench is there for any student who is having a problem.
If a student sits on the Friendship Bench,
two other students are supposed to immediately join them to support them.
The Dream Bench is for brain storming to find peaceful solutions to problems.
If nothing else, those benches are symbols of hope.
TSPG's aren't the ultimate cure to all school conflict but their presence alone sends a powerful message. Some students may not want to ever sit on a Friendship Bench and have other students approach them
- either out of fear or uncertainty, etc. The ISPG though still will represent a tiny piece of calm in their chaotic world. Sometimes students literally feel that they have to escape the walls of the classroom. They just want to get out - both in a literal and a symbolic sense. Some students with special needs have breaks wrttten into their routine. A International School Peace Garden seems like
a perfect spot for a restorative moment!
As a member of the International School Peace Garden program,
your school can register and connect with other schools
and learn about their ISPG's.
