"Water and Salt the Essence of Life", I know I keep harping on about it, but you really should get yourself a copy and read it.
I just wrote it down!
In truth I could say anything by Laurie Lee but probably the favourite for me has to be "As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning."
I'm not a reader, but it sounds a real good book.

As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) is a book by British author Laurie Lee. The book was his sequel to his semi-autobiographical Cider with Rosie, detailing life in mid-20th century Gloucestershire. The author leaves the security of his Cotswold village in Gloucestershire to start a new life, at the same time embarking on an epic journey by foot.
Set in the 1930s, the beginning of Lee's account describes an English countryside unravaged by the huge road network that has defaced modern Britain, as he walks the London Road. After a stint of hard work as a manual labourer in London, he decides to embark on a ship bound for Spain. Once there, he braves the torrid daytime heat of the Spanish sun as he averages twenty kilometres a day from Vigo in the north to the south coast. He manages to scrape together a living by playing his violin outside the street cafes, sleeping at night in his blanket under an open sky or in cheap, rough posadas.
Experiencing a Spain ranging from the utterly squalid to the utterly beautiful, Lee creates a story which evocatively captures the spirit and atmosphere of the towns and countryside he passes through in his own distinctive semi-poetic style. He is warmly welcomed by the Spaniards he meets and enjoys a generous hospitality even from the poorest villagers he encounters along the way.
Interesting to see that this review actually mentions Lee's 'semi-poetic style' as I've always felt that reading Laurie Lee is like reading poetic prose. It's hypnotic, a real can't-put-it-down book. I would certainly recommend it (in case you were in any doubt!)
I will get the book for my daughter, I'm sure she will enjoy it, she loves reading. Both Ross and I are dyslexic and the thought of a whole book is very daunting, small amounts of writing are fine though. Mark recommended a book a while ago called "The Peaceful Warrior" that my daughter enjoyed and has gone on to get one of the sequels called "Socrates Journey" which she is reading now. She always gives me the low down on what the book is about, so I get to know the story......... it's a good way of learning more!
My wife qualified as a dyslexia teacher many years ago and I've known several folk who have that problem. I'm glad you don't let it put you off all the lovely posts you make here on iPeace. I wouldn't have known if you hadn't mentioned it.

I wonder if "As I walked out..." is available as a CD or tape. It would be so lovely to hear it read by a good reader. The sort of thing to smooth a long car journey perhaps.
My daughter reads to me often, she read the first three Harry Potter books to me when she was quite young.

I will get the book for her as a surprise present...... promise not to tell.

I don't have a cd in my car, only a radio with a cassette player :( I'm a bit primitive lol

Nice of you not to notice, but there are often spelling errors that I notice days after I post, but hey ho who cares.

Ross has improved so much since he left school. I wrote a blog about it when I first joined ipeace, it's somewhere in the bowls of my page.

It's interesting that your wife was a dyslexic teacher. I had to battle so much to get any help for Ross, it was not easy to get a child statemented in the 80's. I think it might be easier now, and of course more help is probably available.
Mmmm... getting the statement is one thing, making things move after that can be quite another - as you no doubt found out. My wife did a course with the Dyslexia Institute when she was working as a learning support teacher, travelling around several schools each day to give individual teaching and support and advice to the staff.

Incidentally, dyslexia is an anagram of daily sex - but I think that's the only connection!

P.S. I won't say a word - about the book that is.
We certainly had to jump through many loops. Our local MP was a big help, he is a good man unlike a lot of them.

We had Ross statemented privately but they don't count that, it has to be a Educational Authority one to qualify for any help. We had the Educational Phycologist visit the house, he was great and taught Ross a real neat trick about spelling, which impressed all his mates, long story, but a great skill that only dyslexics have... I believe.

He was alloted several hours help per week, I can't recall how many, but they lady who was virtually attached at the hip to him for most of his school day was an angel, she did not do it for the money, and put in far more hours than she was paid for, and the best thing was Ross really liked her. She had a real great car too which always goes down well with boys, some sort of Merc.

After all this help, when it came to exam time 'they' would not let him have a reader, however hard I tried to get one for him... so it all went pear shape, because if you can't read the questions there is not much chance of passing the exams! He did ok but did not get what he needed for being accepted in the art course he wanted, stupid though because he got A for art!

It's much better know I've heard, and help is readily given and readers for exams too. He did get a reader for taking his theory in his driving test though!

Perhaps we should play the anagram game in the Games Room, you would win easily, I am no good at them.
Glad you enjoyed the book ian...... I had forgotten about this conversation...... and the recommendation.... I meant to order it for my daughters birthday.... too late now!
