What should we do to stop the cruel attack on Gaza ?

My sincere prayers that the War In Gaza END! It did not start today..I do not know when it started. In 1967? In 1948?
The horrible tragedy of Gaza is a long story.
At what junctures could it have changed? Might the story be different if Hamas leadership would have also had hearts looking for Peace?

The hardship is uncalled for..and now there will be more destruction and death.

Quiet could exist..a quiet that would allow people of good will to continue their struggle against unfairness and for National Rights for Palestinians and Israelis alike.

But the quiet has been broken..by hundreds of mortar shells and rockets on Israeli towns.

I do not condone all of the actions or sanctions that have caused Gazans to suffer...but it is impossible to isolate today's attack from the ongoing and systematic war waged by Gazans against Israel civilians.

Maybe the most urgent now is to give infos about mobilization around the world about this attack... For example, here is the call from AIC, Alternative Information Center in Jerusalem:

The Alternative Information Center (AIC) condemns today’s deadly attack by the Israeli Air Force on the Gaza Strip, which resulted in the killing of (at this moment) over 150 Palestinians. The AIC calls on social movements throughout the world to mobilize against these Israeli war crimes and demands that the international community implement sanctions against Israel and indict Tzipi Livni, Ehud Barak and other Israeli political and military leadership for these blatant war crimes, committed as part of Israel’s election process.

Israel’s military attack on the Gaza Strip is not, as Israel is attempting to claim today, retaliation against Gazan resistance to the Israeli occupation and ongoing siege of the Gaza Strip, but part of a publicly admitted political goal of eliminating the Hamas government in Gaza. Israel is exploiting the last moments of the Bush administration to implement the deadly but ineffective neoconservative policies of utilizing military force to effect political change.

Demonstrations against the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip are planned for the major cities of the West Bank, and a joint Palestinian-Israeli demonstration will be conducted tonight in Tel Aviv.

L’Etat d’Israël doit être suspendu des institutions internationales, tant que Gaza sera assiégé et que l’aviation et l’artillerie israélienne continueront à massacrer sa population !

140 morts après la première heure de l’attaque criminelle israélienne sur la population civile de Gaza [1]. « Ce n’est que le commencement » ont dit des hauts responsables israéliens, se promettant de continuer les bombardements de la ville la plus peuplée au mètre carré du monde !

Nous étions une douzaine de militants Palestiniens et Israéliens assis au siège de l’AIC à Beit Sahour (Cisjordanie), discutant de la crise des partis laïcs palestiniens quand nous avons appris les nouvelles. Après quelques minutes de vrai choc, nous sommes partis chacun vers nos tâches dans une telle situation d’urgence : Ahmad J. a contacté ses amis de Gaza pour avoir les dernières infos, Connie et John sont allés au bureau de Jérusalem pour envoyer un appel à agir du mouvement social international, Sergio et Guila ont contacté les médias étrangers, Ahmad A. est allé à une réunion urgente les mouvements populaires de la zone de Bethléem, Nassar a appelé des factions politiques palestiniennes à une rencontre nationale d’urgence, et en revenant à Jérusalem, j’ai contacté les forces progressistes pour organiser pour cette soirée une protestation en commun des forces israéliennes progressistes devant la maison du Premier Ministre, mais la Coalition des Femmes pour la Paix avait déjà pris l’initiative : On se retrouvera à Tel Aviv à 18 heures.

Après avoir organisé le transport de manifestants potentiels venant de Jérusalem, il me reste deux heures avant de partir pour Tel Aviv. Je les emploie pour vous appeler, amis et camarades du mouvement social et international de solidarité avec le peuple palestinien, à répondre immédiatement à ce nouveau crime de guerre commis par mon gouvernement et mon armée : Plus que jamais, le peuple palestinien a besoin de votre mobilisation, de votre solidarité et de vos efforts. Plus que jamais vous devez faire pression sur vos gouvernements pour imposer des sanctions sur Israël et pour qu’il soit clair qu’un Etat qui viole les règles les plus élémentaires de la loi internationale doit être mis à l’écart de la communauté des nations civilisées.

L’Etat d’Israël doit être suspendu des institutions internationales, tant que Gaza sera assiégé et que l’aviation et l’artillerie israélienne continueront à massacrer sa population !

Les dirigeants politiques et militaires israéliens doivent être traînés en jugement dans un tribunal international pour crimes de guerre ! Suivons l’exemple de nos camarades britanniques, et disons clairement que où que Barak, Ashkenazi, Olmert ou Livni veuillent aller, ils seront accueillis par une inculpation pour les crimes de guerre qu’ils ont commis dans les territoires palestiniens occupés !

Pas d’impunité pour les criminels de guerre israéliens !

Last new (AFP): more than 270 killed people in Gaza Strip !!!

Israël poursuivait dimanche ses attaques aériennes à Gaza, qui ont fait plus de 270 morts en moins de 24 heures, menaçant le Hamas qui contrôle le territoire palestinien d'une possible opération terrestre.

Dimanche 28 décembre, 09h07

Réuni d'urgence, le Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU a appelé dimanche à la fin immédiate de toutes les activités militaires dans la bande de Gaza.

L'opération dite "plomb durci", d'une violence jamais vue contre des objectifs palestiniens, vise selon Israël à mettre fin aux tirs de roquettes depuis Gaza sur les localités du sud du pays.

Les attaques israéliennes ont fait 271 morts, en majorité des policiers du Hamas, et 620 blessés, selon un nouveau bilan des services d'urgence palestiniens.

Des raids ont été signalés dimanche dès 07h00 (05h00 GMT) dans la ville de Gaza, dans le camp de Jabaliya, dans le nord du territoire, ainsi que dans le sud, à Khan Younès et Rafah, selon des témoins.

Dans l'une de ces attaques, à Gaza-ville, une dizaine de policiers du Hamas qui se trouvaient dans un poste de police, ont été blessés, a-t-on appris auprès des services d'urgence de l'hôpital al-Chifa.

Un autre a visé un bâtiment du "Conseil des ministres" du Hamas à Gaza. Les rues de la ville de Gaza étaient quasi désertes tandis que des files se formaient devant les boulangeries.

Les magasins et les écoles sont restés fermés en signe de deuil. Des policiers du Hamas étaient déployés dans les rues et bloquaient les accès à certains axes.

Une grève des commerces était également observée en Cisjordanie, à Jérusalem-est et dans les villes arabes d'Israël.

Mais Israël semble déterminé à ne pas s'en tenir aux raids aériens. D'autant que les tirs de roquettes, qui ont fait un mort israélien samedi et plusieurs blessés à Netivot (sud), se poursuivaient de façon sporadique.

Le ministre israélien de la Défense Ehud Barak cité par son porte-parole a affirmé dimanche qu'une opération terrestre contre le Hamas était possible.

"Nous sommes prêts à toute éventualité. S'il est nécessaire de déployer des troupes pour défendre nos citoyens, nous le ferons", a déclaré M. Barak cité par son porte-parole

Selon les médias israéliens, l'armée a commencé à masser des troupes aux abords de la bande de Gaza. Un porte-parole militaire s'est refusé au moindre commentaire.

La radio publique a précisé que "des unités blindées supplémentaires de réservistes ont pris position dans un secteur limitrophe de la bande de Gaza".

Ehud Barak a par ailleurs décidé d'autoriser dimanche le passage d'un convoi d'aide humanitaire à destination de la bande de Gaza, a indiqué sa porte-parole.

Selon un haut responsable militaire israélien, l'armée de l'air a attaqué uniquement des "objectifs militaires" et réussi à porter un coup sévère en surprenant le Hamas. Mais il s'agit uniquement du premier acte d'une campagne de "longue haleine" pour forcer le Hamas à stopper les tirs.

L'opération "se poursuivra et s'intensifiera autant que cela sera nécessaire", a averti M. Barak.

Le Premier ministre du gouvernement de transition, Ehud Olmert, a affirmé qu'Israël ne "combattait pas le peuple palestinien" mais le Hamas, et s'est engagé à éviter une "crise humanitaire" à Gaza.

Le chef du gouvernement du Hamas Ismaïl Haniyeh a répliqué que les attaques israéliennes ne feraient pas plier son mouvement.

Son chef en exil, Khaled Mechaal, a appelé à déclencher une nouvelle intifada contre Israël et a évoqué une reprise des attentats suicide.

Le président palestinien Mahmoud Abbas a qualifié l'offensive israélienne "d'agression lâche" et dénoncé les "massacres dans la bande de Gaza".

A l'ONU, une déclaration non contraignante des 15 membres du Conseil de sécurité appelle "à l'arrêt immédiat" de toutes violence et toutes les activités militaires. Elle ne mentionne nommément ni Israël ni le Hamas.

Le secrétaire général de l'ONU, Ban Ki-moon avait appelé samedi à l'"arrêt immédiat des violences".

La Maison Blanche a estimé que le Hamas avait les cartes en main, faisant valoir que le mouvement pouvait mettre un terme aux frappes israéliennes en cessant ses propres tirs de roquettes sur l'Etat hébreu.

Le président élu américain Barack Obama "surveille" la situation, a déclaré une porte-parole depuis Hawaï où il passe les fêtes.

L'Union européenne et Moscou, entre autres, ont appelé à la fin "immédiate" des violences.

The WAR MUST STOP. It always takes two to make Peace..and it even takes two to bring about an environment to think about living without war.

At the same time as you work on influencing world and Israeli opinion to pressure the Israeli govenrment, i suggest you call on Hamas in Gaza (and the exiled leadership..and Iran) to declare that they are willing to uphold accords that Palestine has signed with Israel.l. I suggest that you demand that they not only accept a Palestinian state in 1967 borders (temporarity) but that they decare they accept Israel's right to exist.

It would also be nice if they stopped letting Gaza be used as a base to traumatize Israeli citizens.
Basically Hamas always was...and still is at war with Israel. That can not be ignored.

Dear Joshua,

i think that iPeace is gathering peaceful people from all over the world, i'm a peaceful person, you are certainly a peaceful person too... in his message below, Willy explained one of the reasons (the other is the corruption of PLO) why Hamas is so strong today... But please, we talk here about the massive killing of civilian people by a State. These people are also peaceful persons... as Israelis are peaceful persons... don't get confused between Hamas and Palestinians, as i don't get confused between Israeli Government and israelis people... I will send you here videos in french/english/hebrew that i filmed a few weeks ago with four israeli activists who refuses the current logic of the war of Israel government and Hamas leadership... Do you think that this massive attack and the blocus is a good answer to the unbearable missiles on Sderot ??? I hope not... And it seems to me that you live in an israely settlement in west bank... Do you think it's a good way for Peace between Israelis and Palestinians ?

Yes Vincent..i agree that the situation and Israel's response is not good.

I just think it is important that BOTH sides feel the pressure of the Peace Camp- since the situation is also the fruit of ongoing Hamas rejectionism.

At certain junctures i believe that Israel, the stronger of the parties, has a special responsibility to "give" ..to take positive initiatives and risks. But i can not sit back and let the "weaker" side manipulate the situation through the cylnical use power and psychological warfare.

I don't like the response..I wish i knew what the better alternative would be. I admit..i am at a loss..deeply frustrated and concerned.

Yes I live on a settlement..and that is an interesting point not relevant to this discussion.

Let it be said that i came to my home (which relevant or not, was an Jewish kibbutz before 1948 with a tragic story of its own) at a time when no Palestinian organizations and no Arab states were willing to negotiate with Israel. I came knowing/hoping that i would have to face a dilemma when the Arab world finally wakes up to Israel's right to exist.

As a settler i believe i have a special role to play in creating good human/personal relations with my neighbors regardless of what national and political solution is decided.

While there are settlers who harm Palesitinians, you will find at least as many (I would say many more) who have shown respect and even friendship towards them. (For example Palestinian employees and their wives present at wedding celebrations of Jewish co-workers on our Kibbutz, joint efforts of medical emergency squads)

you're right Joshua, all my good friends in Palestine and Israely are deeply depressed and frustrated... I believe that the only alternative is massive peaceful demonstrations from civilian population both in Palestine and Israel to say "we don't want this war"... The only good answer in my opinion will come from palestinian and israeli citizens themselves... Not today, maybe tomorrow... The last hope... before a new global intifada...

About settlements, news are so bad about harassment against palestinian population... Watch these videos for example about repression against Ni'lin peaceful demonstrations...

I am the last one to deny that there is harassment on the West Bank..by both settlers and by security forces. Kindly separate the two. When some security forces harassed Palestinians in our area, members of the Kibbutz helped the Palestinians file a complaint)

More difficult is the symbiosis between settlement officials and the Authorities in limiting construction and development of Palestinian villages..(Although in certain areas of municipal management there may be cooperation between the villages and the settlement regional councils)

So things are bad..just not entirely devilishly evil.

I still believe in peace and mony palestinian still believe in it too......
Just because there is a group of us like Hamas want to role palestine by trying to be heros that oes not meen that we are all Hamas ...
But we should also remember that during the last 6 monthes Hamas through 300 messels on Israily areas but killed one only....Hamas said this was because of Gaza strike and to remind the world about the forgrtten X-file (GAZA) ... while israily army yesterday killed over 200 individual and they continue there attacks uring the last 6 monthes they did there best to keep Gaza uner cruil strike...
AS we can see .... this will not end ... both sides will continue in an action / reaction cycle ... and the war will not stop untill both of them are really concerned about the civilians lives they are responsible about..

Thank you Haya for this forum.

I am happy there is a place where i can feel safe opening myself to the suffering that is going on in Gaza due to my governments actions....Where i am able to express my frustration openly, without having to join in a chorus condemning israel. Where i can be questioned even in a pointed way..and still feel respect and a willingness to listen.
