A New Way Forward: Teaching Democracy to Tomorrow’s Leaders:
A proposal to promote Civil Society and Human Rights through educational projects in Israel/Palestine.
In many Arab Israeli towns, unemployment rates are high, along with school dropout and crime rates. Even people with degrees have trouble finding proper jobs. Two of their greatest obstacles are the English language and a lack of technological resources. A facility with the English language and modern technology is practically a prerequisite to obtaining any professional or academic position in this global environment. Many Israeli-Arab towns lack both an after-school English language program, and adequate computer facilities for after-school programs.
This program will address those obstacles by providing much-needed English- language and computer technology assistance in underprivileged Arab-Israeli towns. In the process, the program will be showing the Israeli-Arab public the benefits of Democracy in practice; including bringing the message that Democracy, women’s rights, and freedom of religion, are consistent with Islamic values. This approach is what makes this project so unique. The program provides much-needed practical assistance with known problem areas, while simultaneously promoting Democratic values. The program will use computers, the internet, and proprietary curriculum materials - designed to be used in Muslim schools - that teach the English language, using content that also involves Democracy, freedom of religion, women’s rights, tolerance, and the non-violent problem solving. The program will rely heavily on existing Islamic references, and the translation of great Enlightenment statements into Arabic, as significant teaching aids.
This plan will strengthen American-style Democratic institutions in Arab-Israeli areas through education, in the process reducing support for authoritarian ideologies and extremism in those areas. By providing an English-language after school program in underprivileged areas, and supporting that with computer and internet resources, the program will make a real difference to local communities. We have identified four locations in which to begin, and have established the local contacts necessary to implement all aspects of our plan. Introducing a practical English language and computer technology after-school program for high school students in Israeli Arab towns will both improve the situation on the ground in those areas, and also portray the real, caring and nurturing side of the United States of America and what its citizens really stand for.
As Thomas Paine wrote in 1776:
“The cause of America is in a good measure the cause of all mankind.”
This program is one way of demonstrating that in practice.
