More about me
.I-KAY
Singer/song writer/ musician
I-Kay (Kay Ashiedu) was born and educated in Nigeria, West Africa. In 1985 he formed a singing group called the “MESSENJAH” and began his professional musical career as a writer, singer, bassist and percussionist.
In 1986, the MESSENJAH released their debut album in Nigeria titled “RISE AFRICA”. The production of this album exposed the group through series of live performances in colleges, clubs and dance hall.
Following the exit of a member of the trio in 1988, I-Kay formed “JAFORCE”, a duo of I-Kay and Hardy Jimbes.
In 1989, Jaforce toured West Africa alongside popular African and World acts like Majek Fashek, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Alpha Blondy, Lucky Dube, Burning Spear and Culture.
In 1990, Jaforce recorded another album titled “MR. GENERAL”. Controversy over the anti Military lyrical content of this song led to it’s not being released. Jaforce soon disbanded and subsequently I-Kay went solo.
In 1992, I-Kay joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and sang at pro democracy rallies and meetings to entertain the crowd. This enhanced his image and popularity but angered the military as Democracy was denied the Nigerian masses.
In 1994, I-Kay arrived in the USA and started work on a solo album which he recorded at the Apollo Theatre Recording studio.
In 1995, I-Kay embarked on a musical tour of some major US cities and Europe, and opened for big names like Shaggy, Maxi Priest, Elephant Man, Buju Banton and UB 40.
I-Kay has since recorded numerous singles and performed in various shows all around the world.
His current album “AFRICAN DANCE” features prominent artists like singer/guitarist Bunny Brissett, Sidney (Steele Pulse), Sister Carol, Mike Livingston, veteran Augustus Pablo and engineer/guitarist Jim Gately.
The album is available on line @ www.cdbaby.com/cd/ikaybunnib; www.vpreggae.com; www.ebreggae.com.
Videos of “African Dance” and “Come To Me”, two tracks from the new album, are currently being aired and can be seen on line @ www.myspace.com/ikaybunnib and www.youtube.com/ikaybunni.
