a prayer for matthew
With or without looking through the lens
of cultural context, suffering remains the same.
Some people cry with a loud voice, others only when no one is looking,
and some cry without any tears at all. How easy it is to pity the innocent,
once we have found them to be so, according to our tribal law.
Not that long ago, Mankind slept through the crucifixion. Today
we are barely awakening to the cries of battered children.
Disturbed by the torture of political prisoners, we applaud our ability
to draw a demarcation, after two thousand years,
between certain acts of war, finding some to be criminal offenses.
If you want to see through the eyes of God,
don’t look at Man too closely. The tragedy pulls you in, til you’re lost
in macabre fascination, enthralled with the scrutiny of the grotesque.
For the next two millennium, can we make it our goal not to retaliate,
but to make restitution? to celebrate and embrace our differences?
It IS possible to overcome being obsessed with fixing the blame
and looking for justice; try that sometime. What’s left
is an overwhelming sorrow, compassion for all who suffer- for ALL,
do you understand? No matter what the circumstances, without exception,
we have no right to say who deserves forgiveness and unconditional love.
And if we look at our own hands carefully, you might even find
traces of blood. Commitment to unity and love excludes
and judges no one; it means nothing less than taking ownership
of all the fruits of humanity, from the highest acts of selfless achievement
to even the most contemptible of atrocities.
There can be no false pride, in view of all Man has done- nor can there be
total despair. Underlying the suffering, the ignorance and the cruelty,
is the divine potential of the human spirit, that all men can reach
towards. But if you won’t try, then at least see that it’s there.
Look again. Don't accept the ‘You and Them’ delusion; there is only Us.
