Arkeel Newsome sets state rushing record

Newsome became the state's all time leading rusher on Thursday, racking up a remarkable 396 yards and six touchdowns on just 26 carries in Ansonia's 56 21 pounding of Masuk, the ' mark of 8,279 yards (2004 2007) with a 57 yard burst into the end zone on the first play of the second half.

"That's our bread and butter play. They were blocking that whole time, so I just saw that crease," Newsome said before further analyzing the play.

Newsome punched in the ensuing two point conversion to make it 42 14 at the 11:40 mark of the third quarter. The romp was already on, for much longer than Masuk could handle.

Newsome handled the ball two more times after that, rushing once for 22 yards and then again for 66 down the right sideline, past the last line of defense for a score before turning into a spectator. He finished just shy of his best day at the office 401 yards in a win over Derby as a sophomore and now has 8,385 rushing yards for his career.

Top ranked Ansonia, a two time defending state champion, improved to 6 0. Masuk dropped its second straight to fall to 4 2.

"He's got great, great feel and understanding of where the field is, where his blocking schemes are, and how to attack them. That's difficult.

"You don't teach vision, that's just a natural thing for an athlete of Arkeel's ability."

Newsome picked apart Masuk from the opening drive, rushing three times for 66 yards the last a 27 yard burst to put Ansonia up 7 0. By halftime, as Ansonia led 34 14, he had already rushed for 251 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries.

"If people have any questions about how good Arkeel Newsome is, they don't know if that ball's blown up or stuffed," Ansonia coach said. "I'm telling you the truth. They can spend time trying to figure that out, because he's awesome."

Newsome's second touchdown came on the Chargers' second drive, an 18 yard scamper to make it 14 0 with 3:15 left in the first quarter. He also had scoring runs of Authentic Brandon Thomas Jersey 47 and 11 yards before halftime.

For the season, he has 1,580 yards rushing and 26 total touchdowns on just 106 carries.

"You have to be perfect or as close to perfect as possible," Brennan said. "You can't make mistakes, you can't drop balls, you can't allow long drives. And you can't miss tackles."

The Panthers did a little bit of all of that.
