Beautification project: Roberta Lawrentz, left, and Sue Ellen Davis of Girard Junior Women's Club fill a planter in downtown Girard. The annual project was initiated by Davis's mother, Jane Harris. Planters in front of businesses are filled with flowers every summer as one of the group's projects. Girard Junior Women are dedicated to serving the Girard community and most recently donated to Emmanuel House and presented a Girard graduate with scholarship money. Anyone interested in joining should contact Lawrentz or any member of GJWC.

Linda Beshara of Boardman says: "This is Nattie Jo. She is 5 years old. She became a member of our family in August of 2006 when we adopted her from the Mahoning County Dog Pound. My son Philip and I adopted Nattie Jo two days before he left home to attend Ohio University. Nattie Jo has really been a blessing to me. She helped me through empty nest when my son left for college. She is definately the top dog in our home! Nattie Jo and my son have a really special bond, and the reunion between the two of them when he comes back home to visit is so sweet.

Jackleen Buzzelli and family sent this picture. The brown dog is Zoe, who was adopted from the Mahoning County Dog Pound last year when she was about 1 year old. She has blended in nicely with their family and is best friends with their unclaimed stray Dalmatian, Noma. Jackleen husband found Noma on I 680 in February 2000. They ran several ads, posters and notices to try and find her owners, but she was never claimed. Jonathan, her 9 year old son, has been the true best friend to both dogs. Noma stays within an arm length of him at all times when he is home, and waits patiently when he is at school. Zoe is always taking her toys to Jonathan to start a game tug of war or fetch.

From Randy Wolfe of Poland: "Meet Bear. As a mailman on the city South Side, I would take my afternoon break on the street where Bear lived. I was amazed to see him as a 10 month old puppy; he truly looked like a bear cub. I would toss him treats, as he was tied to a cinder block in the lot next to his owner house. To my amazement, his owners moved and untied him to fend for himself. I watched him lying at the door of the house, waiting for them to come home. I watched this for several days, then I realized I needed to go get him. So armed with only food and water, a friend and I went there, and I brought him home with me. That was four years ago. People say to me, "He lucky you came and got him." But the truth is, Bear is such a fun, loyal and loving dog, he taught me to be a dog lover. Now I say, "I lucky he came along."

From Tammy and Dave Dragus of Lake Milton: "We would like to share our story of Molly. We adopted her on May 28 from The Animal Rescue Center in Eastlake, Ohio. She is 12 weeks old and is a Terrier mix. She has helped fill a void in our house, because we recently had to have our 13 year old Corgi mix put to sleep. She has taken to her new home by leaps and bounds and is trying very hard to get along with her three "cat sisters." Every day for her is a new adventure, and we look forward to watching her grow old."

Debbie and Doug Gamble of Edinburg, Pa., adopted Shania in March 2007. She is a 3 year old Pit Bull mix. They got her when she was 8 weeks old from the Westmoreland County Humane Society in Greensburg, Pa. Debbie says: "She was the first pick from a litter of 13. She is the most wonderful, loving, pleasant dog you could ever imagine, and we love her so much. Before she was a year old, she had to have surgery on one knee, then the other 7 months later for luxating patella, which she had done at Town Country in Warren by Dr. Moxley. What a great doctor and great place to take your best friends. She is running and playing like the rest of my dogs now, thanks to them. Dr. Moxley says she ought to be the poster child for her breed, and we agree. Bringing her home that evening was the best day of our lives. Little did we know how much joy she would bring. She is truly "man best friend."

Ruby is a 3 year old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix. Megan Perencevic Calvaruso of Youngstown found her in May 2010 on the city East Side. She coaxed Ruby into her car, cleaned her up, took her to the vet and took her home to enjoy life. She adds: "Many Boardman residents may recognize Ruby picture as she was a "lost dog" for five days last July. Not long after Ruby was adopted my husband and I took Ruby over to my parents home in Boardman. While we ran errands, Ruby escaped their fenced in backyard. My father, sister and neighbor chased her on foot and by car but lost sight of her near the Boardman Public Library. We immediately started a campaign to get Ruby back. Over 1500 posters were printed and hung in virtually every business and on every telephone pole in Boardman. Five days later, I received a call from a Boardman police officer saying she spotted Ruby on Roche Way in Boardman. I spent the next four hours canvassing the neighborhood. Then, after hours of searching, I saw two cars stopped up ahead on the road. Seconds later, Ruby appeared. I couldn believe it. I called her name, she came running and we have never been apart since. I found this dog . twice!."

Debbie and Harry Deeley Fowler adopted Boo Radley, 4, right, in December 2007 from the Trumbull County Animal Shelter when he was 3 months old. Harry says: "In September 2007 we lost our Lab/Pit Bull mix at 6 years old to leukemia. My wife was devastated, as she loved her dog Buddy. I saw an article in The Vindicator the week of Dec. 11 that the Trumbull County Shelter was having an open house. My wife was reluctant to get another dog, as no one could replace Buddy. I drove to the shelter to look at the dogs that were available. I saw the cutest little puppy with a black eye and ear that a little boy was holding. The boy told me that he was taking the puppy home for a birthday present. I wish I could have taken that dog, but alas he was taken. I told my wife that night about the cute little white puppy I wish I could have had and about the other dogs. She finally agreed to go to the shelter with me. Once we got to the shelter we were looking around and guess what? The little white puppy was there in the crate! I told my wife that that was the pup I told her about, and she liked him too. The people the day before were denied for some reason, and the puppy was available once again! It must have been meant to be. The rest is history and we love our Boo Radley! Here he is pictured driving Sam.

Diana Bell of Austintown says: "This is Dory. Seven years ago, my son was attending classes at YSU. It was the beginning of the semester in January, and the temperature was around zero. Parked in a YSU parking lot, he got out of the car, left the door open and got something out of the trunk. Upon returning to close the door, a 3 month old puppy was sitting in the front seat, cold, hungry and with a bad cut over her eye. He did not have the heart to put her back outside, and instead brought her home."

Hannah Lee, who is 5 years old, was adopted by Randy Hoover of Columbiana from Angels for Animals in September 2006. She a mixed breed who loves to ride on the bow of his small boat. She had been abandoned in Mill Creek Park during the winter in 2006. She was nursed back to health by an anonymous woman who could not keep her permanently and gave her to Angels. He says she is a very gentle dog who loves people. She is also extremely spoiled, but a wonderful companion and great house dog. They live in a secluded area of Pine Lake where she lives a true dog life.

From Sherri Maddick of New Bedford, Pa.: "This is Bailey, our beautiful female Border Collie mix, adopted from Angels For Animals July 2008 at the age of 7. She just turned 10 on May 24. We think she is pretty special. We cannot go anywhere without someone saying how nice or how beautiful she is. She does not bark at anyone or any other doggies and can't understand why some dogs bark when we walk in various parks! She had surgery for bladder cancer in November, but she is doing well and we are hoping to have many more good years with our little angel. This picture was taken on our fishing boat in Florida. Bailey loves to go rides in anything that moves!"

Thomas Altiere Jr., 32, of Royal Troon Drive in Warren, right, stands in the courtroom of Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court with his attorney, Gary Rich. Altiere, son of Sheriff Thomas Altiere, pleaded guilty Tuesday to deception to obtain a dangerous drug for using deception to obtain prescriptions for Hydrocodone, a pain medication, from multiple doctors and multiple pharmacies earlier this year. The Trumbull County Adult Probation Department will determine whether Altiere qualifies for a program that would allow him to receive drug treatment in lieu of conviction on the charge.

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for minor injuries.
