Carvedilol improves vascular outcomes better than metoprolol

Single-pulse stimulation of the perirhinal cortex (PRC) evoked field responses in the dorsal hippocampal CA1 region in urethane-anesthetized rats. In depth profiles conducted by moving the PRC stimulating electrode, the largest amplitude hippocampal potential was generated when the stimulating electrode was located within the perirhinal region. More dorsal (temporal cortex) or more ventral (lateral entorhinal cortex) stimulating sites elicited minimal hippocampal potentials.

LH-RH agonist is the key drug in hormonal therapy for premenopausal patients with breast cancer. It is important to reduce the pain related to injecting the LH-RH agonist, because patients must continue the medication for several years. We developed a way to reduce the pain by cooling the needle injecting site with a frozen ice pack.Proteomics methods were used to characterize proteins that change their form or abundance in the nucleus of NRK49F rat kidney fibroblasts during prolonged hypoxia (1% O(2), 12 h). Of the 791 proteins that were monitored, about 20% showed detectable changes. The 51 most abundant proteins were identified by mass spectrometry. The incidence, morbidity and mortality of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is rising throughout the world. The total economic cost of COPD in the US in 1993 was estimated to be over $US15.5 billion, with $US6.1 billion for hospitalisation, $US4.4 billion for physician and other fees, $US2.5 billion for drugs, $US1.5 billion for nursing home care and $US1.0 billion for home care. Office visits, hospital outpatient visits and emergency department visits accounted for 17.3% of the direct costs for COPD in the US.

We found that the delivery of small amounts of TG to the brain through the carotid artery rapidly reduced both spontaneous and amphetamine-induced locomotion, abolished preference for palatable food and reduced the motivation to engage in food-seeking behavior. Conversely, targeted disruption of the TG-hydrolyzing enzyme lipoprotein lipase specifically in the nucleus accumbens increased palatable food preference and food-seeking behavior. Finally, prolonged TG perfusion resulted in a return to normal palatable food preference despite continued locomotor suppression, suggesting that adaptive mechanisms occur.
