A male dolphin has been born at Brookfield Zoo. The Chicago Zoological Society, John Kuhn Womens Jersey which manages Brookfield Zoo, announced the birth of a male dolphin calf born on October 16. The calf, born to Tapeko, 31, is approximately 40 pounds and 3.5 feet long. The zoo dolphin presentations have been temporarily canceled to allow Tapeko and her calf time to bond and get acquainted with the other dolphins in the group. Dolphin shows at Brookfield Zoo have been temporarily canceled to allow a male calf born Wednesday to bond with his mother.
The 40 pound calf was born to Tapeko and is about 3 1/2 feet long, according to a release from the zoo. Staff are optimistic that the calf is healthy and doing well, zoo spokesman Jamie Hansen said in an email.
The calf is Clay Matthews Kids Jersey nursing and doing what known as slipstreaming, resting in the mother dolphin wake, important milestones in a young dolphin development, according to the release.
Tapeko has raised four other calves, including two she gave birth to: Allison 7, John Kuhn Kids Jersey and Noelani, 9, both at Brookfield. The calf and Tapeko are currently in an enclosure that is not open to public view.
