Essential summer beauty hacks to sweat-proof your makeup

While the sunshine is certainly cause to celebrate, the humid air and high temperatures throughout summer can often leave you with dreaded makeup melt.

Whether it's in order to remain shine-free or keeping eyes smudge-proof, there are ways to give makeup longevity despite the warmer weather.

Apply after moisturiser and before makeup. For something with real holding power, try Milk of Magnesia, which has oil-blotting properties and will create a smoother canvas for foundation application.

Take a cosmetic sponge with a small amount of Milk of Magnesia soaked in. Dab all over the face and allow to dry.

It should leave a chalky residue that will disappear once applying foundation and allow makeup to glide on smoothly.

SET YOUR MAKEUP

To avoid a face of makeup instantly melting once it hits the heat, use a makeup setting spray.

Mist your face gently from a six-inch distance in a T-formation and then an X-formation for some serious staying power.

STOP EYELID CREASE

Many people lament the fact that eyeshadow creases in the heat due to excess oil production on the eyelids.

To avoid the shiny and smudged look, use a dab of primer or even a swipe of foundation all along the eyelid before applying eyeshadow.

This will act as a base between the skin and the eyeshadow, giving it something to hold onto.

USE WAX BROW LINER

Eyebrow wax has a thicker consistency and is therefore superior to powder in terms of staying power.

Use a wax pencil to set hairs in place and provide pigmentation, and comb through to give subtle definition.

AVOID EYE SHADOW

Eyeshadow in hot weather can quickly melt, due to the powdery consistency meeting moisture and oils.

For an alternative to eyeshadow, run a nude liner on the bottom water-line to instantly open up eyes, for a fresh look.

APPLY FOUNDATION IN CRISS-CROSS STROKES

Liquid foundation is easy to apply, but in hot weather, can swiftly look greasy on the face.

Using a foundation brush, apply a small amount in deft criss-cross strokes until the face is covered in a thin layer.

This not only blends better and creates a cleaner finish, but will also stop the streaky look when you sweat, as opposed to easily creasing with a straight line application.

PAT POWDER ON

After aplying foundation, add a light dusting of translucent powder in order to set.

Instead of dragging the brush across your face, which can also transfer foundation and make areas look patchy, dab the brush firmly onto the skin.

This will allow the powder to sit on the face compactly, and ensure it is evenly covered.

Beat the shine: Keep blotting papers handing in order to soak up excessive oils that can give you a shiny complexion

USE BLOTTING PAPERS

An easy and low-maintenance way to dab away oil during the day, is to keep blotting papers on hand at all times.

This will remove the excessive top layer of oil that can cover the face during the day and keep your complexion light and dewy.

USE LIP STAIN

Although lipstick allows a more intensely coloured pout, on especially hot days, opt for a lip stain instead.

This is less likely to melt and easily smear in hot temperatures.

A rosy stain tends to sink into the lips, rather than sit on top and so has better staying power.

It also tends to be more flattering when worn with a dewy sun-kissed complexion, than a heavy lipstick.

USE WATERPROOF

In the summer, there's a constant worry of dreaded raccoon eyes when dark makeup transfers either onto lids or on the under-eye areas.

Use 24-hour stay waterproof liners and mascaras, which have a lower water content and therefore less likely to budge on a sweltering day.

DITCH POWDER BLUSH

Instead of dusting on your usual powder blush, opt for creme blush instead.

Powder blush can intensify on greasier areas on the face, leaving a patchy look.

Creme blush can be easily swept on with a finger, looks more natural and blends easily into warm skin tones for a sun-kissed and healthy look.

EMBRACE THE GLOW

To make the most of the dewiness that the heat will give your skin, add a dab of highlighter at the top of your cheekbones, next to the eye area, in order for the shine to be in all the right places.

POWDER YOUR LIPSTICK

In order to make any lipstick matte and longer-lasting, add a light dusting of translucent powder over the top.

As well as sealing in the colour by removing any excessive oil, the powder will also keep lips from becoming tacky in the heat.

LESS IS MORE

One thing that can immediately contribute to having slick skin is an overabundance of moisturiser, even before putting on foundation.

Applying too much means that a lot will not sink in, and will consequently leave a greasy residue on the skin.

When it comes to moisturiser in the summer, less is more; and it's best to opt for one of an oil-free variety.
