When you see a player in person for the first time its totally different than when you watch them on TV. wholesale nfl jerseys . You can really tell what theyre all about when the TV cameras arent focusing on them and how they carry themselves the entire night at the arena. I go back to five experiences I had growing up in New York City witnessing these guys for the first time and the impression they made on me. The scouts call it "jumping out at you" and these five opened my eyes and made me take major notice because I was watching something special. 1. WALT FRAZIER (New York Knicks): Saw him for the first time at Madison Square Garden during the 1971-72 season and the guy was flat out the coolest dude in the building. He had such poise and stage presence that you just knew he could really play. His basketball IQ was off the charts and he made all the simple plays and made the tough ones look easy. He did it in such a graceful fashion and he was always so calm. Clyde was The Man in NYC. I wore his Puma Clydes when I played because he was the standard in my book. When I saw him I said to myself - "Now thats a pro". No wasted motion and flash and dash, just productivity and excellence. 2. JULIUS ERVING (New York Nets - ABA): I remember riding on a Yellow School Bus with my St. Brendans CYO team from Brooklyn out to Long Island to see "The Doctor" during the 1973-74 season. Dr. J had come over to the Nets from the Virginia Squires and was the real deal. Man oh Man was he an explosive and beautiful player to watch. He had the style with the Big Fro and with the Red, White, and Blue ABA ball he was in the perfect league to strut his stuff. The man could throw down some incredible dunks and had major hops and yet he did many with the greatest of ease. Anytime he had the ball you sat on the edge of your seat because the Doctor was going to do some work. Bigger than life to me back then. He had - "It" - cant put my finger on it - but you just knew he was the guy in the building you had to see and he delivered. 3. MAGIC JOHNSON (L.A. Lakers): Saw him at Madison Square Garden during his first few years in the League and the thing that jumped out at me was - Wow - a 69" point guard? Cant be. Well he WAS! He could flat out ball. The no-look pass running the Showtime break and he had such great charisma and looked like he was having a blast out there. His enthusiasm for the game was off the charts. How could you not like this guy even though you were rooting against his team? Speaking of team - he was all about the other four guys on the floor with him. He made everyone better and everyone was accountable to him. You could watch the body language of his teammates and coaches and you knew he was the galvanizing force in their world. Worth of every penny of the price of admission - you didnt get cheated by him. 4. LARRY BIRD (Boston Celtics): Saw him at MSG in his Rookie Year - I remember that Dave Cowens (terrific hard-nosed player) was a teammate of his at the end of his career with the Celtics. I guess the word that jumped out at me about Bird was "complete". I was so impressed with his fundamental base in his game - he could shoot it, handle it, pass it and rebound it. Hed guard ya even though he was a step slow and man he was a gamer. He was a point forward and everything ran through him. He was amazing for his size, to see him as such a catalyst of positive plays for teammates. He wanted the ball and was clutch. I walked out of the Garden that night and said to myself (I wasnt happy about it being a New Yorker) - the Celtics are back because of that dude. 5. MICHAEL JORDAN (Chicago Bulls): Saw him at MSG when he played with the North Carolina Tar Heels in the ECAC Holiday Festival and then again in his first game at the Garden as a Bull vs. the Knicks. On both counts - oh, my God!! Are you kidding me? This man had a nasty competitive streak that you could see the first second you watched him. His ball skills were tight and his first step was off the charts. His elevation on his jumper was tremendous and his dunks were nasty, creative and with force. He came to play and looked like he relished playing on the big stage. I was like - wow - havent seen anything like this before. Kept saying to myself - hes special. Boy was he ever. If I had one player next to me in the foxhole, hed be the guy that Id want having my back. You could see it and feel it when you saw him. A cut above the rest. cheap nfl jerseys .
