On multiple occasions, Kris Humphries has stated an interest in returning to the Boston Celtics next season.

But obviously, as much as he might want to stay, that's not promised. He's poised to hit free agency this summer and Boston's roster could go in a million different directions.

Nobody, including president of basketball operations Danny Ainge, knows yet what the Celtics will look like next season. They might still need another year or two of rebuilding. They might somehow rope another All-Star this summer and take a big step forward. They appear to have set themselves up well to make a turnaround at some point, but the situation is fluid.

As such, Ainge can't make Humphries any promises about his future place in the organization.

"I have had a few conversations with Kris," Ainge said Thursday morning during his weekly appearance with 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich. "Because he's been with us all year, he was with us in the summer and all this year. Kris sort of knows where we are as an organization and he knows that we like him. And he knows that there is a lot of uncertainty, depending on which direction we choose to go this summer.

"None of us know. But Kris knows we like him. Coaches like him, his teammates like him. But also, we just can't make any promises yet."

Humphries has shown his value this year, but everything should depend on money and circumstances. Plenty could happen between now and July to impact whether the Celtics view him as a piece for the future.
