Today marks the beginning of a new era. So many hopes are pinned to our new president, who has shown remarkable wisdom and temperance. He represents the end of so many terrible things, and the beginning of what the world believes will be a tough yet more cohesive road. President Obama begins his tenure with perhaps some of the harshest challenges faced by a new president in this century. The country, the whole world, has united to stand behind him with patience and heartfelt support.
I have deep misgivings about modern government, and they will not be swept away in the tide of popular opinion.
But today I will add my heart to the chorus of millions who look upon this day as a day of great challenges and great hope. I will remember all who have given their sweat, their time, their reputations, their fortunes and their lives to the ideals and dreams of a world without hate and derision. A place where we afford common compassion and forebearance to each other.
And I will cry, as my heart swells with all that it has cost us, and with all that we as human beings, are capable of becoming.
