Laura Mercier says you should still look like yourself with makeup

Jafri, Laura Mercier’s right-hand woman, travels the world to train makeup artists and regular girls alike on proper makeup technique.

To share Jafri’s expertise as well as launch Laura Mercier’s new summer collection, Rustan’s hosted “Summer In Ibiza” last April 17 at Holiday Inn Makati’s Oz poolside bar. The event celebrated all things fresh and summer, featuring a workshop by Jafri and performances by the Company of Ateneo Dancers and DJs Janus and Marlo Naval.

Jafri created a cheek-focused look using Laura Mercier’s creamy face illuminator in rose gold. She taught her the horseshoe application method suitable for different kinds of blush. The method is simple: you use a natural brush to apply blush under the eyelid following the natural shape of your cheekbones. You apply the product with a rounded pattern, creating a horseshoe shape under the iris, blending right into the hairline.

“It’s important to hold the brush at an angle and not straight like a pen to avoid harsh lines,” she added. Jafri stressed the importance of proper blending. Well-applied makeup should not be blended so well that it’s impossible to tell where the product used starts or ends. “The beauty of the creamy illuminator is that once it sets, it doesn’t go away,” she explained. “It’s perfect for all-day wear.”

She punched up the look by adding a dab of Portofino red Paint Wash lip paint and used a contour brush to pull the color onto the side of her face. She finished off the look by pressing a pretty petal pink into the model’s lips.

The easiest way to pull off the perfect summer makeup is to emphasize your eyes. Jafri’s next two looks played with different products and techniques that will make you want to take off your sunnies and flaunt your gorgeous eyes.

Jafri’s strong eye look put the focus on the model’s eyes by using Laura Mercier’s Caviar eye stick blended right into her eyelid. She scribbled the brush right into the model’s crease and pressed shine just in the center of the eyelid. The final effect was flawless but strong, perfect to wear straight from the beach to the bar. This technique makes the eyes stand out yet still retains a natural look.

She applied eye glacé under the eye waterline for a bright-eyed look. The new collection features metallic colors such as the gorgeous gold Wet Sand, which really makes your eyes pop.

Another technique Jafri swears by is to smear color on the upper lash line and soften the color by blending it upward. This technique is flattering for any eye shape and is a simple play on the classic smoky eye.

Jafri finished each model’s makeup in just a few minutes and achieved a casual look, like they just threw makeup on instead of spending hours to get their flawless looks.

“Over-application of any product is a mortal sin at Laura Mercier,” she stressed. Especially during summer, it is very important to use the correct product and application technique to ensure long-lasting wear.
