I am a life member of the United Nations Association of the US (UNA-USA).
I have carried the UN flag down the middle of Market Street in San Francisco-my birth city-during a parade.
And I have also written to Congress many times on the subject of human rights and justice--to use my taxes for good rather than for violence.
Today is the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights by the UN.

It is also the day (in the year 1520) when Martin Luther, one of my teachers, burned the order of the Roman Pope Leo X to cease Luther's efforts to bring truth to the people.
It is also the day (in 1964) when another of my teachers received the Nobel Peace Prize.
Congratulations to Martti Ahtisaari for this year's prize. http://nobelprize.org/
Ahtisaari said in his acceptance speech, a few hours ago:
"All conflicts can be settled, and there are no excuses for allowing them to become eternal."

I will write to President-elect Obama today to urge peace-making to be his priority. I'm also writing to Congress to ask them to apply pressure to end Robert Mugabe’s authoritarian control of Zimbabwe.
My church dedicated a Peace Pole for our 60th anniversary of the local church. With the message in several languages:
May Peace Prevail on Earth.
