You on the internet, so there no way you missed Adam Goodes calling out the racist comment of a 13-year old girl in the crowd of Friday night footy match.

I'm sure my peers are also furiously blogging about the incident and his response, which has been called courageous and timely. You might even be sick of hearing about it, but I think this kind of discussion is the only appropriate response to occurrences of racism.

In case you missed it: during Friday Swans/ Collingwood clash, a girl from the crowd called Goodes an an insult made especially poignant as the game was a part of the AFL Indigenous round. Even more so a few days before Australia National Reconciliation Week. A report released yesterday has found racism on the job is still a problem faced by many in Victoria.

The logic of many bloggers and commentators is that she didn know it was racist, that isn a racist term, that Goodes response was an overreaction. This is precisely why this debate needs to continue.

Australia has a tarnished history of horrible and violent acts towards our Indigenous population. Let's not forget that until 1967, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders under our constitution. A term such as 'ape' cannot be separated from these facts or the way it has been used in the past- as a word to demean and belittle. Words are entrenched with meaning, and can have much more power than we imagine.

The fact this has launched such public and engaging debate shows to me this is a conversation that needs to continue. On the whole, the media has handled the incident with balance and tact. It is by acknowledging and confronting racism, like Goodes did on Friday, can we move to a future where issues of race can be and dusted.
