It is sponsored by ONE/CHANE, Chappelle Gardens, HartfordAmericorps, Capital Area Substance Abuse Council and Hartford Community Mental Health Center. Van Harris, community organizer for the council, said his organization, which offers substance abuse prevention and drug awareness programs, joined the project after residents at recent neighborhood meetingscomplained about drug dealing.
The people in the www.mgsecretariat.fr community are really tired of the drug activity,'' Harris said. We're going to do what we can to make people aware that you don't have to live like that.''
Although overall drug activity is down in the Barbour Street area, said Dep. Hartford Police Chief James Berry, there are still problems. He said drug dealers who are stopped in one spot reappear at another, such as the Chappelle Gardens playground.
With the help of Williams, the council and www.cametleon.fr Chappelle Gardens hope to involve more residents in the anti drug effort.
Twelve year old Jamal Lawrence said he will be there. Tired of witnessing drug deals at street corners, he www.immopolisparis.fr said he hopes young people in the neighborhood will take a stand against such negative influences.
It's not right, doing drugs,'' Jamal said. I don't want to see it happen anymore.''
Larry Woods, social services coordinator at Chappelle Gardens, said the rally is just the beginning of an effort to involve residents in neighborhood improvements.
