A government admission that cuts will have to be made in Britain's Olympic plans in reaction to a rapidly emptying public purse. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/olympics/article5263723.ece
could be a capital idea for London 2012: The Green Games.
An ecologically economic Olympic Games which showcase how it is possible to build and maintain a high quality of life without consuming so many resources. A new transport system using electric cars and trains to shuttle athletes to and from an olympic village built of recyclable materials...which may be left as a blueprint for more housing to help the homeless after the event.
Use the time leading up to the event for promoting harmony between competing nations. Every one of the developed nations to sponsor an athlete from a poorer country - Any professional athlete is allowed to take part but must donate 50% of their fee to a charitable trust...or put the money directly into an account for the charity of their choice. This should be the first non-profit Games. Medal winners take home a charitable donation from the IOC to help the charity of the medallists choice. A charitable trust account can be set up where corporate interests can donate their advertising account which is then distributed to the poorer regions around the world.
Britain has a long history and has a unique opportunity to show the world how people can make a difference today and for many years to come, leading the way in making the change from an Industrial to a technological age by redefining the values of people all over the world; no longer content with accruing vast wealth but more concerned with using every available resource to bring people together rather than building new barriers that sustain and emphasise our differences with religious and political bigotry.
I'll even throw in a new slogan for free: "Give Peace a Chance."
Okay, it's not original, i'll grant you, but you have to admit, it's worth a try.
