Dear fellow Belgians (I hope there are a few on this forum),
Please let me share with you an interesting and courageous initiative I've discovered recently. Our country is being weakened by absurd disputes between the different communities and language groups. These disputes have worsened over the past months and are more and more frequently turning into real hatred and anti-democratic behaviour. We have much more urgent topics to address than the endless disagreements on the way our institutional landscape should be reshaped. The ongoing economical and financial crisis, the increasing unemployment, major environmental issues, to name just a few.
Recently a few courageous voices were raised to show that we have much more to win by being one united country rather than a number of disagreeing regions and communities. These voices remain very timid and do not attract as much (media) attention as the various extremist views we all know. Belgians are not particularly nationalistic and definitely not outspoken about it. However it is clearer every day that it is the future of our country that is increasingly at stake. We can definitely do something about it, but for that we need to stop watching without reacting.
I encourage you to check out this website: http://www.belgischealliantie-alliancebelge.be/. This is not a political message (I have no official link with this organization), this is a message to promote understanding, respect and unity between our communities.
Barbara
