ORCHARD PARK, N. Discount Ray Ban Sunglasses Aviator .Y. -- Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gaileys job is secure, though quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick should expect to face a challenge for the starting job next season. That was the assessment general manager Buddy Nix provided on Friday, as the Bills (3-4) come out of their bye week preparing to travel to play at Houston (6-1) on Sunday. Nix went public in backing Gailey, saying he wanted to put to rest any doubts about the coachs future beyond this season. He referred to Gailey as being one of the NFLs best offensive coaches, and added that having the Bills make a switch for a fifth time since 2001 would only set back the teams development. "I hope I can put that to rest," Nix said. "Its the age-old thing, and theyve done it around here for years. They start over about every three years. What that does is make damn sure that you dont make it. Thats what it does." Nix also wasnt interested in appeasing a fan base thats grown frustrated with Gailey and the Bills, who have gone 12 seasons without making the playoffs -- the NFLs longest active drought. "You appease (fans) for about three months," Nix said. Hired by Nix in 2010, Gailey has a 13-26 record in Buffalo. Nix also revealed that Gailey has at least one more year left on his contract, something the team had previously refused to discuss. Gailey has been on the hot seat after the teams inconsistent start. Buffalo has lost three of its past four and looks nothing like the team that was expected to build off last years 6-10 finish. The Bills further raised hopes this off-season by signing defensive end Mario Williams to a six-year, $100 million contract in free agency. The high-priced defence has been the teams biggest disappointment so far, ranking second last in the NFL in yards allowed, and last in yards rushing, points and third-down efficiency. As for quarterback, Nix defended Fitzpatricks performance while at the same time saying he intends to bring in a player to develop and compete for the job. Nix said adding a quarterback is a bigger priority this off-season because Tyler Thigpen and Tarvaris Jackson, are both in the final year of their contracts "Now you can read into that. Its not like were trying to replace somebody," Nix said. "Its strictly to make our team better. And if we put him in there and we develop him in two years or whatever, and hes the guy, and if he beat him out, then youve got a healthy situation. And thats where were heading." That was a little different from what Nix had said earlier in the day during his weekly radio show on Buffalos WGR. "Listen, we have said from Day 1 that we want to draft a good young quarterback," Nix had said. "I dont want to leave here without a franchise guy for the future in place. I have not said that before, but Im saying it now because its fact." Aware that his comments on radio had raised speculation regarding Fitzpatricks status, Nix approached the quarterback following practice to reassure him. Fitzpatrick said he had not heard what Nix had said on the broadcast, before adding: "I cant worry about any of that." It was only a year ago this week, when Fitzpatricks role as the Bills long-term starter appeared secure. Coming out of the Bills bye week at the end of last October, Fitzpatrick signed a six-year, $59 million contract extension following the teams better-than-expected 4-2 start. Fitzpatrick has struggled ever since, and his inconsistencies have carried over into this year. Hes 4-12 in his past 16 starts, a stretch in which hes thrown 25 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. In defending Fitzpatrick, Nix pinned the blame of the Bills troubles on the teams under-performing defence. "Listen, you score 34 points, youre supposed to win the damn game," Nix said, referring to a 35-34 loss to Tennessee two weeks ago. "I mean, how many do we have to score?" As for his own future, Nix said he has no intention of leaving Buffalo until the teams a winner or owner Ralph Wilson fires him. "I came here to make sure this thing was turned around and on solid ground," said Nix, whos in his third year as GM. "And Im not going anywhere until it is, or unless the owner says I am. And he and I are the only two that can. How about that?" ------ NOTES: As expected, the Bills activated rookie CB Ron Brooks of the IR/Designated to Return list and placed OG Chad Rinehart (left ankle) on season-ending injured reserve. ... RT Erik Pears (hip/groin) is doubtful. He visited a specialist Thursday and had treatment on his injury, but there remains a possibility he may require surgery for the second time this year, Gailey said. ... Veteran CB Terrence McGee (left knee) is also doubtful. Discount Ray Ban . INDIANAPOLIS -- The agent for Colts offensive co-ordinator Bruce Arians said Wednesday night that his client has been released from an Indianapolis hospital and that they are finalizing details to begin interviewing for head coaching jobs. Earlier in the day, a league source familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that doctors were still trying to determine the extent of a health problem that forced one interview to be pushed back. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because details of Arians illness have not been made public by the team. Mike Brown, Arians agent, denied there had been any change to Arians schedule. Arians, a 60-year-old prostate cancer survivor, has been complaining of dizziness and migraine headaches, conditions doctors believe is related to an inner-ear infection, the person told the AP. Five NFL teams are looking for head coaches. The Colts have given at least three teams permission to speak with Arians: the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles. The San Diego Chargers are also believed to be interested in Arians. They hired Tom Telesco, Indys vice-president of football operations, as their new general manager on Wednesday. Arians took over the team after head coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia in September. Under Arians, the Colts went 9-3 and clinched their first playoff berth of the post-Peyton Manning era. The nine victories tied the NFL record for most wins after a midseason coaching change and immediately created speculation about Arians future plans as well as the possibility of him winning the leagues coach of the year award. Pagano returned for the final week of the regular season and shared a bear hug with Arians, a longtime friend after an emotional win over Houston. But when Arians showed up for Sundays team breakfast in Baltimore, he said he felt ill and was taken to the hospital. Quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen called the playss in Arians absence, a late adjustment that made a bigger impact than anyone acknowledged after the game. Discount Ray Ban Sunglasses. "Its a big deal that Bruce got ill out there, it really is," the person told the AP. "Its not a side note. Its a major happening, its major adversity that you have to deal with." Arians was released from a Baltimore hospital on Monday evening after his blood pressure stabilized, but has been under doctor supervision since then. He was medicated for the return flight to Indianapolis and taken immediately to an Indy hospital by ambulance, the person said. Pagano, rookie quarterback Andrew Luck and other Colts players have repeatedly said they would like Arians to stay in Indy, though they understand why he would leave for another team. But they certainly didnt want a health problem derailing what could be Arians last best chance to fulfil his lifelong dream of becoming an NFL head coach. Arians has said he will listen to other offers, though he is happy in Indianapolis. The Colts are expected to give him a pay raise and a new job title if he returns next season. Clearly, things werent the same without Arians during Sundays 24-9 loss to the Ravens. "I dont think people realize how unsettling all that was for Andrew (Luck)," the person said. "As a rookie in a playoff game, to all of a sudden have Bruce gone. Thats the guy who is talking in your ear, and then youre in the playoffs and all of a sudden thats gone. Its a big deal." Arians has mentored the likes of Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and now Luck. He won two Super Bowls as an assistant in Pittsburgh, served on Paul "Bear" Bryants staff at Alabama and has had a big part in two of the biggest turnarounds in NFL history -- the 10-game improvement of the 1999 Colts and Indys nine-game improvement this year. His only previous head coaching experience came during a six-year tenure at Temple in the 1980s. ' ' '
