What are the most common causes of tooth loss?

If you have lost one or more teeth, dental implants are an excellent solution to replace missing teeth. Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. They are permanent, long-lasting, and comfortable to wear. They do not affect your speech and let you talk and smile confidently.

Given below are common causes of tooth loss and how you can prevent them.

Trauma-trauma can cause loss of teeth in a variety of ways. A child can fall off her bicycle and on to her face and the teeth can be knocked out. Or, the baseball bat or cricket bat can hit you accidentally on your jaw, knocking out the teeth from trauma. Sports players and athletes are at a greater risk of losing teeth due to trauma. However, others can also lose their teeth due to trauma.

Gum disease-this is a very common cause of tooth loss. Gum disease is a localized infection of the gums and the supporting structures of teeth that result in teeth loss, as well as the bone supporting the teeth. Gum disease if left untreated progresses to a point where the teeth fall out on their own and can’t be repaired.

Dental caries and tooth decay-dental caries or tooth decay is yet another common cause of tooth loss. Tooth decay damages not the just the teeth, but the underlying structure, including the bone and the gums. Dental caries usually damages teeth to such an extent that it can neither be restored nor repaired. It often leads to significant infection in the bone and around the ends of the root, leading to tooth extraction to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Poor dental hygiene and care-people who do not follow proper dental care regime, including regular brushing, and flossing are more likely to lose their teeth than those who follow proper dental care regime. Brushing and flossing is important to remove plaque and bacteria from and in-between the teeth. Brushing twice daily and flossing once in a day helps keep the teeth healthy and strong for long.

Consuming too much of sugary foods and drinks-sugary foods and drinks are the biggest enemies of your teeth. The sugar that is present in cakes, pies, desserts, colas, and sports drinks clings to the surface of your teeth, allowing bacteria and plaque to form there. The decay causing plaque attacks the tooth enamel and results in tooth cavities and gum disease.

Not paying regular visits to the dentist-failing to pay regular visits to your dentist in Thailand is yet another significant cause of teeth loss. Routine dental check-ups ensure that your teeth are healthy and that there is no underlying disease or problem that may result in tooth loss and other dental problems.

To avoid tooth loss, visit a good dental clinic in Bangkok on a regular basis and adhere to the dental care tips provided by your dentist. If you have however lost one or more teeth, consider getting dental implants as they are the best possible dental restorative treatment option.
