VIDEO FOR CHANGE NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2009
THE HUB: Mobile Phones Capture Police Killing Unarmed Man
On January 1, 22 year old grocery worker Oscar Grant III was shot and killed by police in Oakland, California. This incident may not have received national attention except for the videos taken by eye witnesses on their cell phones showing Oscar Grant laying restrained on his stomach when Johannes Mehserle shot him in the back. This event, much like the Rodney King beating of 1991, is proof of the power of video to spark public discussion, rally local citizens, as well as call for justice. Chris Michael is providing updates on this case as it develops. Read more.

Controlling the Mesage in Gaza
As Israel expands its military offensive in Gaza, all eyes and ears turn to the region. Both sides, of course, are enaged in an information war. However, the Israeli government's strategic use of media and online outlets like YouTube to disseminate its core messages is unprecedented. Read more on the Hub Blog.

Image Is Everything
Donate to WITNESS to get video cameras to activists to challenge human rights abuses.
Dear Friend,

http://www.witness.org/

Pictures can change the world. They can reveal truths that governments want to hide.

Maybe that sounds like an exaggeration. But think about how images from Abu Ghraib forced the U.S. government to examine its torture policies in Iraq or how the video of Rodney King's beating galvanized a global response to police brutality. Or more recently how videos of monks being beaten led to an international outcry against human rights abuses in Burma.

At WITNESS, our job is training and supporting human rights activists around the world to use video to end human rights abuses in their countries. Can you help by making a tax-deductible donation of $35, $50, $100, $1,000 -- whatever you can afford?

Whether it's working with women's rights activists in Zimbabwe, community organizers ending forced evictions in Cambodia or groups tackling slavery in rural Brazil, WITNESS is there, training activists to use one of the most powerful weapons they have -- video that can expose human rights violations to policymakers, the media, fellow citizens, and the international community.

With your support, WITNESS provides training, equipment and support to human rights advocates in some of the most violent places in the world. And with your help, WITNESS can succeed!

Co-founded by musician Peter Gabriel, WITNESS empowers people to transform personal stories of abuse into powerful videos and campaigns for justice. Our footage appears on CNN, ABC, CBS, PBS, and BBC…and we reach millions of people around the world on our global channel for human rights, the Hub.

Please make a donation to help courageous activists in some of the most dangerous places in the world - from the Congo to Burma to Chechnya -- to end human rights abuses and build a better world for their families and communities.

Thank you for all you do,

Yvette J. Alberdingk Thijm
Executive Director
