Blessed are you, God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. You are
the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.
You comfort us in our affliction, so that we may be able to
comfort others who are in affliction with the same comfort with
which we ourselves are comforted by you.
You enable us to know that as we share abundantly in Christ's
sufferings, so through Christ we shall share abundantly in comfort
too.
Thank you that our suffering is not meaningless, but is for the
comfort and salvation of others. Thank you for a hope that cannot
be shaken.
Jesus has taught to besiege you with constant prayer. Here we are
again, coming in his name. Amen.
My Cup Runs Over Have you ever wondered why God gives so much? We could exist on far less. He could have left the world flat and gray; we wouldn't have known the difference. But he didn't.
He splashed orange in the sunrise and cast the sky in blue. And if you love to see geese as they gather, chances are you'll see that too. Did he have to make the squirrel's tail furry? Was he obliged to make the birds sings? And the funny way that chickens scurry or the majesty of thunder when it rings? Why give a flower fragrance? Why give food its taste? Could it be he loves to see that look upon your face?
If we give gifts to show our love, how much more would he? If we - speckled with foibles and greed - love to give gifts, how much more does God, pure and perfect God, enjoy giving gifts to us?
Thank you for the assurance that my work for you will never be lost. The Lord Jesus promised that even a cup of cold water given in his name will not lose its reward.
May I be zealous, steadfast, and immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord and utterly counting on you.
I trust you, Lord, because I believe that my efforts for you are not in vain. May I always give myself fully to your work, knowing that anything else I might accomplish in this life will have no value in eternity.
In the name of your son, my Savior and Lord, I pray. AMEN
"I tell you the truth. If a person believes, then that person has life forever."
-- John 6:47 (ERV)
KEY THOUGHT:
John repeatedly reminds us that deciding about Jesus is THE watershed event in our lives. When we believe and obey Jesus, we pass from death to life -- this is not a delayed transaction, but something that happens now. We no longer stand under judgment, but share in eternal life. While that life is not all that it will be when Christ returns, it is a quality of life, a character of life, and fullness of life that begins now! Don't settle for anything less than eternal life -- today!
TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy God, please give me the courage and the confidence to live the life you have given me to its fullest, not holding anything back because I know that life cannot be taken from me. In Jesus' name, and by his power and grace, I pray. Amen.
VERSE: I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
-- Galatians 2:20
THOUGHT:
When we were baptized into Christ, we shared in his crucifixion
and we were raised up to be a new person. Christ is alive in us.
The real challenge is for us to be Christ alive in our world! Our
motivation? Not to earn salvation, which has already been given us
by grace, but to honor him who sacrificed all to save us.
(See Romans 6:1-14)
PRAYER:
Thank you, God, for loving me and sending Jesus to redeem me
from my sin. I commit to you today that I will live by faith in your Son who gave himself so I can spend eternity with you. I ask that by your Spirit, you help Jesus' life be seen in me. Through him I pray. Amen.
