Tree if that piece is YOURS it is marvelous
and if it isn't it is marvelous just the same.

Once there was a carver,
while waking the beach came upon a most magnificent piece of driftwood,
of a type of wood never seen before.
what can I carve out of this wood, it will be priceless it is so rare!

So he thought and he thought, then he carved and he carved,
he had JUST enough wood there to make a walking stick,
and made the most beautiful walking stick any had a ever seen!

Then he looked at what he had left,
and he though and he thought, and he carved and he carved
he had JUST enough wood left to make chop sticks,
and made the most beautiful chop sticks any had ever seen!

Then he looked at what he had left,
and he thought and he thought, and he carved and he carved,
he had JUST enough wood left to make a tooth pick,
and made the most beautiful tooth pick any had ever seen!

Then he looked at what he had left,
and he thought and he thought, and he carved and he carved,
he had JUST enough wood left to make this story!

Hey Steph!!! The guidelines say "A SHORT story" what did you do? And you forgot to tell them that you are American and living in Italy!!! Not a very decent example, you are....
next time, cut the story down!!!

SHOE DESIGNING
I have designed a collection of shoe sculptures that yes, have gotten some pubblicity, but I am still waiting to design a real line of wearable shoes from them. I also have a website with lots of images of them, and so.......
One day a certain Italian wrote to me saying "Ho visto le Sue scarpe e vorrei tanto che mi disegnasse una collezione, anche da esporre ad una fiera a Parigi".
Excitedly I replied in Italian (translated here) "I would be thrilled to design
a collection of shoes for you, and happy to have them exhibited also at a fair in Paris. I will make some sketches for you to see as soon as you want."
We exhanged dozens of emails, I worked on designs, and we came to an agreement that I would meet him at a fair in Bologna, but that he would pay my expenses. I was to stay at a friend's house, so actually it cost him little for 2 1/2 days - the train ride to and from Bologna, and food they sell at the fair.
I was so excited, with drawings in a case, wearing some artistic looking clothing, but with business in mind....now, I was to meet him in person, at the entrance to the fair.
There he was......sunglasses, large case with wheels, and, surprisingly, lime colored pants, and of course Italian shoes. He eyed me up and down and off we went to the hundreds or thousands of stalls exhibiting leather of every weight, color and design for shoes, belts, coats, accessories, and every kind of belt buckle, button, decoration for accessories.....the hall was bursting with an inventory of zillions of pieces. The leather was so exquisite from lightweight luscious in color and texture, and super heavy suitcase weight pieces, hung from walls or draped onto tables. It was so exciting being in the middle of all of this! And I thought "Finally, I am going to design a real collection and women will be wearing my unusual designs!"
We stopped for a sandwich at a certain point, and I pulled out the drawings. He looked, he studied. "You know" I said, "these are very unusual and they get a lot of attention. If you want to have something one of a kind, these should be very interesting to a public looking for something different". He seriously studied the sketches, and said, "Well, you haven't studied the drawing of shoe designs, have you?" "Well, no" I said, "But my designs were shown in New York for a designer, and in Chicago, and were a main event in Italy's fair....." "No" he said, "I don't know if they will work". "WHAT?" I said. " You saw the things I sent over internet, you asked me to come here....you have got to be joking" (it comes out differently in Italian, but basically he got my point).
"Well, ok, I guess, but can't you sort of tone down the designs? Are you sure they will work?" "Listen, you saw them, YOU called me! YOU wanted me to design them, so here I am"."
We walked on, glaring into the distance of stall after stall, stopping then to drink some champagne they were offering in one of the stalls.
"Listen, I said, I know I can do it. If you want me to, I am here. Otherwise, we will have to forget it. I don't know why I came! If you want originality, here it is. If you want something that will attract attention in Paris, these are designs that will do it."
He, thinking, walked on and said "OK, yes I want you to do it. I know you do interesting things, yes. I want YOU."
The conversation went on like this, several times, he wanting me to do it, he not being sure if I could. I kept saying that if he wanted me to do it I would, otherwise let's forget it.
The next day we met at the fair again, and the same story continued. In the lady's bathroom I was calling my husband saying, "This guy is nuts! He says yes, he says, no....I am going crazy!!"
Finally...it was time to leave. We went to the train station together, he put all the samples of accessories and drawings in my hand and said YES, I want you to do it. It will be wonderful. I was disgusted, and confused. My emotions had been taken over by a madman's rollercoaster ride for over two days, and I was worn out.
We said goodby. He told me to work on the finals of the designs and to send them to him immediately.
I got home after a few hours, hugged my husband really tight saying, "Finally! Some normality!!"
The next day......
I get an email.
"I have changed my mind. Send me everything back. The samples of accessories, the other drawings I left you. Everything. DO NOT DO THE JOB."

Where is the smile in this story? There was none THEN. But after looking back at it, the fun I had at the wonderful fair, the excitement of thinking of doing the shoes, I do smile now. But it took time getting to it.

Antonia and Tree, Tree and Antonia
Thank you for your insights and contributions - very worthwhile. It is cold here in Italy....but the chills I got from your wonderful reflection, Tree. Certain phrases are simple but so true, Tree, so true!!

Another example?
I may not own an airplane, but the same amount of time spent on making the money to get one?
I would rather invest my time into my friends who can fly.
I think I'm richer that way (friends rather than possessions?).

I am not a tall man that I am called Tree.
What would you call someone who has wild birds land on him?

Just a copy of a note just left on a friends page (a farmer in another country who seeks to learn from me about self reliant living (but we are learning from each other ;)) I thought would be okay here also? I guess I could give it a title..

I Am The Richest Poor Person I Know~

Some people would consider 10 cars, large home, much money in the bank as wealth.
Devote much of their lives perusing those things.

Me? I'd rather have one horse who would give his life for me.
One small home that is well built and takes little maintenance/time
And what I have now....
A wife who treats me with huge honor and respect and devotion and above all, love.
And my children who tell me they are glad to have a father they can brag about,
and write me often to thank me, tell me that they love me, respect me, and I am the best friend they have ever had in life.

That to me is wealth.
I did not devote my life to gathering material things beyond what I need to live and to live well having very little, I invested my time instead, into the hearts and minds of my family.
And am richer by far than most I know who have 10 times the material wealth I have.

They cannot take that with them when they go,
I can.

Hi Steph,
I loved your "neighbour story" . Exactly the same happened to me before Christmas. I brought the cookies and SHE kissed me......... However, how can we want peace in the world if we are not able to live in peace with our neighbour ?
Kiss,
Antonia

Three Things

King Akbar has nine scholars in his court in which Birbal is the king’s most favourite. That is why the rest of the court is jealous of Birbal.

One day scholars of Akbar complained to him “We all are better, so then why do you always take favour of Birbal.Akbar?” He replied “Good, we will see about that and make a decision soon”.

King Akbar called one noble person and gave him 3 Rupess and told him to purchase three things and each one should not cost more then 1 Rupess. “Also remember”, he said, “One thing should be from HERE, the second thing from THERE and the third thing neither from HERE NOT THERE.
The noble person went to market and asked the shopkeeper to give him these three things. The shopkeeper was told about these these three things but said “These three things are not available in my shop and you will never get these three things at any cost!”

The wise person went to Akbar court and replied to the King that these three things will not be available at any cost and if BIrbal is able to get these three things we will surely admire him.

Akbar called Birbal and told him go to market and get these three things and Birbal replied to the king “Tomorrow these three things will be with you.”

The NEXT day as Birbal came into the the court Akbar asked Birbal “Have you gotten all the three things, and Birbal replied to the King “Of course my Lord”.

I have spent one Rs on feeding poor people with food. Good wishes aren’t used “here” but it will be used “there” (in Heaven).

That’s why one should do good things in your life HERE and you will get reward THERE in Heaven.

I have spent the second Rs in purchasing sweets. It is used HERE and it will never be used THERE.
It means what you earn and spend is equal only HERE it has no relation withTHERE (Heaven).
I have spent the third Rs in playing casino which is neither used HERE nor used THERE.
> It means the money which you spent in your leisure time it has no use.
> All wise people become speechless……
