Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2nd 1869 in Porbandar in Gujarat.
Known as 'Mahatma' (great soul), Gandhi was the leader of the Indian nationalist movement against British rule, and is widely considered the father of his country. His doctrine of nonviolent protest to achieve political and social progress has been hugely influential.
On January 30th 1948, he was assassinated in Delhi by a Hindu fanatic.
I am new to learning about Ghandi so I do not have quotes that I can post of what he has said, but would like to post something I have just said, that you can quote me on, that with what I learn of Ghandi, others may know why I say I would really liked to have met the man, because I see in him someone who I think would have been a good friend.
This is so others may see in me something, I think Ghandi if he saw, may have cause to agree on it being a good friendship, much as all who post here in honor of him, appear to me to also be friends of his :D

What good would it be to be a millionaire
if all those around me are poor?
I would rather live equally,
and improve on what that means.
I am not a pacifist,
I am not passive
I am a warrior,
with one chance to live this life.
I do not seek peace.
I seek with all that I am,
to walk the walk of peace,
And let peace find me.

Thank you for this group. I love all the quotes, thanks for taking the time to post them everyone.
To mention different things that I admire, Ghandi did great things for immigrants in South Africa and he had training in law too.
The world would be a lot better off if more lawyers and judges were like him. That's for sure! And also if more immigrants could successfuly resist abusive treatment, like he did..

would have been long without faith. She saved me from despair. With time my faith has increased
and the need for prayer has become irresistible
My peace often cause envy.
She comes to me in prayer.
I am a man of prayer. As the body is not washed is dirty,
so the soul without prayer becomes impure.

The first condition of non-violence is justice all round in every department of life.

Mahatma Gandhi was a man who loved God the sermon of the mountain, helped him at times of difficulty --
He was an ordinary man like us
I learned something with it
The non-violence,to have faith and stubbornness
dream,but chasing the dream,
pray, but to do my part here in the world
Be more active

From the time I was a late adolescent and began to really study Gandhi I became a deep believer in non-violent civil disobedience-----------the older I have gotten, the more deeply I believe.
Seems to me the world could use a strong dose of this right now to send a message to governments and tyrants (and supporters)--enough is enough--------------the world's peoples deserve to live in peace.
(Thoreaux believed deeply in and practiced civil disobedience--even went to jail rather than pay an unjust tax.)
You need to be a member of Gandhi ~ man of peace to add comments!
