Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2nd 1869 in Porbandar in Gujarat.

Known as 'Mahatma' (great soul), Gandhi was the leader of the Indian nationalist movement against British rule, and is widely considered the father of his country. His doctrine of nonviolent protest to achieve political and social progress has been hugely influential.

On January 30th 1948, he was assassinated in Delhi by a Hindu fanatic.

Gandhi sought to break the cycle of violence and reprisal. What distinguishes us from the beasts, he said, is our continuing commitment to moral development. Gandhi said that humanity is at a crossroads and must choose between violence (the law of the jungle) and non-violence (the law of humanity).
Where it takes courage to turn evil into good. Now is the time for each of us to manifest his courage: the courage of nonviolence, courage dialogue, the courage to hear what we do not want to listen, the courage to restrain the desire for revenge and to be guided by reason.
