Religious occasions are numerous in Egypt. They are characterized by folkloric elements some of which go back to pre-Islamic times. These elements, however, may change in keeping with the passing of time.

1. Ashura:
Muslim Sunnis and Shi’is celebrate Ashura’ on 10 Moharrem, the first month of the Hijri year. Egyptian Muslims, mainly Sunni, celebrate Ashoura’ by reading verses from The Holy Qur’an, singing religious songs, and preparing rich foods that include meat, chicken and pheasants. Social and family commitments are observed on that day. The bride and groom-to be pay a visit to his/her future in-laws and presents ’al-musem’ (a gift) to his/her fiancée. This is usually a contribution to the setting up of their home.

2. Al-Mawled Al-Nabawi Al-Sharif (The Prophet’s Birthday):
Al-Mawled Al-Nabawi is celebrated on 12 Rabie’ Al-Awal. It is an occasion marked with greatest of festivities as the counterpart of Christmas in the west. Children are offered sweets, gifts and Al Mouled’s doll.

3. Al-Israa’ Wa Al-Mi’raj:
The eve of 27 Ragab is an occasion for celebrating Al-Israa’ (the prophet’s journey to Jerusalem) and Al-Mi’raj (his ascent to heaven).

4. The Eve of Mid-Sha’ban:
The eve of mid-Sha’ban is an occasion celebrated in a manner similar to the eve of Al Israa’ wa Al-Mi’raj.

5. Eid Al-Fitr:
Eid Al-Fitr (the feast that follows Ramadan’s feast) is rich in folkloric elements. It lasts from three to five days during which Muslims celebrate the joys of life and remember their dead as well. Preparations For the feast begin in the last fifteen or ten days of Ramadan. New clothes are bought, particularly for children. Cookies are prepared and houses are stocked with peanuts, fenugreek, lupine, nuts and dates in accordance with the availability of financial means.

6. Eid Al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice):
Eid Al-Adha is the feast of sacrifice and it coincides with the performance of Haj (the pilgrimage to Mecca). The feast begins on 10 Zu Al-Hijja and last five days.

At Selsela, it is almost the same site of the ancient library-museum complex within the Royal Quarter, in the district then known as the Brocheum, where a few remains of the Graceo-Roman civilization were recently uncovered and later will be displayed in the Library museum. At the panoramic vista across the circular Eastern Port stands diametrically and serenely the old Mameluke Citadel of Qait Bey, built in 1480 on the site of the famous Pharos Lighthouse.

Historical Dimensions:
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina lies alongside the University of Alexandria Faculty of Arts campus, in Shatby, and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea along a substantial portion of its northern frontage. Egypts economy is the most varied of the Middle East economies, where sectors of tourism, agriculture, industry and service contribute at almost equal rates in the national production. Consequently, Egypt s economy is picking up development at increasing rates, based on a climate luring investments represented in proper legislation, convenient policy, internal stability, trade and market liberalization. This is besides what Egypt possesses of solid infrastructure of transportation, communication, energy sources, skillful manpower, modern industrial communities, banking system and stock market
Since the dawn of history, Egyptian women have played a significant role in the various aspects of life. March 16 was chosen to be Egypt's Woman's Day in pursuance to UN resolution urging member states to celebrate their own women's day each in accordance with a history event.
That day in the year 1919 marks Egyptian women's revolution against colonialism, their struggle for independence and the death of Hameida Khalil, the first woman to sacrifice her life for the cause.
On that day, 300 women demonstrators led by Hoda Sha'arawi took to the streets raising the crescent and the cross to symbolize national unity and denouncing British occupation and colonialism.
On the same day, four years later, Hoda Sha'arawi called for a demonstration, the first of its kind, for the foundation of the first Egyptian Women's Union. Her purpose was to improve women's educational level to ensure political and social equality.
Women in Egypt continue to be involved in the various aspects of life whether political or social. At present, Egyptian women can become members of parliament and are entitled to vote. They have also been chosen to fill such top-level positions as ministers, judges and ambassadresses.

Testimony of a traveler to Egypt
Why should you learn about the Egyptian people? In all honesty, it is because they are amazing. There is a simple beauty in the people that words can not properly express. You see it in their smiles, in the clothing they wear, and in their homes and businesses. The Egyptian’s that we were so happy to come in contact with were incredibly kind, very caring and genuinely concerned for us. I have made friends that will last a lifetime.

One word of advice, it is very important that you respect the Egyptian people’s religious and social beliefs while you are visiting. What occurs in other countries throughout the world may or may not occur in Egypt.Testimony of a traveler to Egypt
