Mandela made this statement from the dock at the opening of his trial on charges of sabotage, Supreme court of South Africa, Pretoria, April 20 1964
"I am the first accused. I hold a bachelor's degree in arts and practised as an attorney in Johannesburg for a number of years in partnership with Oliver Tambo. I am a convicted prisoner serving five years for leaving the country without a permit and for inciting people to go on strike at the end of May 1961.

Nelson Mandela Happy Birthday !! Gandhi yes, of course and Martin Luther King, Jr. as you say but Nelson Mandela was subject to death EVERY day for 27 years.
That is why I called him the most courageous Man of the 20Th Century...but they were too. Their combined sacrifices and millions of others resulted in the Election of A Black President of the United States....in this there is no doubt.
Meanwhile, what they gonna' do about Stephen Biko ?
I know that many messages from World "leaders" - as well as from thousands of admirers - will have poured in today for Nelson Mandela. And that he probably won't have time to read them all.
But I still think that we should send him this tribute from the members of iPeace.
Together with Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King jr., Nelson Mandela forms the trio of men most respected by everyone in the Peace Movement.

I wrote the following for Nelson's 90th birthday - hopefully it will be posted quite a few more times yet:
Mandela
Mandela, with such quiet dignity
Strides the world stage with real style
One man who doth have true integrity
Long tenured in jail, now freed for some while
True statesmen are rarer than hens teeth friend
He kept true to his life beliefs once out
Now this man celebrates life yet again
Ninety years old and still walking about
Will ever we see a greater man breathe
More resilient spirits that wont bend
Majestic in stature he will not leave
This world unmarked when we reach his life end
Three cheers for the man who freedom defines
One without peers here in our present times
