Mandela made this statement from the dock at the opening of his trial on charges of sabotage, Supreme court of South Africa, Pretoria, April 20 1964
"I am the first accused. I hold a bachelor's degree in arts and practised as an attorney in Johannesburg for a number of years in partnership with Oliver Tambo. I am a convicted prisoner serving five years for leaving the country without a permit and for inciting people to go on strike at the end of May 1961.

"A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination."
"As I have said, the first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself... Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility."
There is a saying about politicians to which I pretty much adhere: "Don't believe a single word that they say!"
Nelson Mandela is one of the very few politicians for whom I would set aside this (generally very good) advice. In fact he is one of the very few living men in ANY walk of life for whom I have the utmost respect.
He inspired my favourite protest song of all time, and I would ask you all to pay special attention to these lines:
In the first verse:
"Are you so blind that you cannot see?"
In the second verse:
"Are you so blind that you cannot see?
Are you so deaf that you cannot hear?"
In the third verse:
"Are you so blind that you cannot see?
Are you so deaf that you cannot hear? Are you so dumb that you cannot speak?"
