I remember back in the day I worked for more feminist social and somewhat grassroots social service organizations... the style was "level glance". That was the phrase, unfortunately it seems that most of the world didn't get that memo before the pendulum swung right of center. It meant poeple were equal and each individuals opinions were truly valued. Whatever complications, problems, issues that faced the organization were openly discussed amongst the members/employees. People took turns running meetings no matter what their positon was in the organization. Certainly work was divided up according to the talents of the individuals. The most eloquent would be the spokes persons, the most nerdy would handle the tech stuff and whoever was good with bookkeeping would do the books. It was based on peoples strengths and energy level at the time. It was non hierarchical.
Later when I worked for more mainstream organizations and was asked what sort of management style I thought best I always said level glance and explained it. This eye to eye attitude didn't sit well. I might have missed out on some promotions. ... because the general attitude was that somebody had to be in charge. Someone has to be in control, the staff needs a leader. You can be a leader and still run things in a level glance manner. I think that we all need to take responsibility and contribute. It is respectful and promotes a creative approach.
I am involved in a local peace group which I think runs that way. I haven't been that active due to other obligations in recent years. I also recognize this in President Obama's style and this gives me new hope.
What does level glance have to do with peace. Its about respect, walking in someone else's shoes, really listening to what people have to say, giving every one an opportunity to be heard and letting every one operate from there strengths. I think that if the world tried to operate like this on a day to day basis it would be a lot more peaceful.

I totally agree we are a group of ordinary women who are using that concept.
