Amitabha(Sanskrit)- ‘od dpag med(Tibetan)
The Buddha of one of five enlightened-families corresponding to the perfected states of an individual’s five aggregates..
Amitabha is the perfected state of our faculty of perception/discrimination, and is the manifestation of the Buddha’s pristine cognition of discernment visualized in the aspect of an embodied deity. Although Amitabha is usually depicted as red in colour, his appearance varies according to the different practices of tantra in relation to which he is visualized. Amitabha literally means ‘limitless’ or ‘boundless light’.
Amitayus(Sanskrit)- tshe dpag med(Tibetan)
A meditational deity particularly associated with longevity practices.
Amitayus is regarded as the Buddha Amitabha appearing in the aspect of a deity of longevity and together with white Tara and Ushnishavijaya, forms a trinity of meditational deities associated with life and longevity. Practices centred on Amitayus often belong to the Kriya class of tantra, although Anuttarayogatantra forms also occur.
Amitayus literally means ‘limitless life’.
