This morning, in the hazy sleep just before awakening, I saw a strange vision. John McCain and Sarah Palin dressed in nicely tailored suits, (his was grey, hers was yellow) behind tall barriers made of green fabric, fluttering in the breeze. They were in position to march before the crowds, and had fencer's foils (the very slim swords) in their hands, and were practicing saluting in sychronized precision as they marched in, which they then did. They appeared on the speaker's platform, "swords" at the ready, and spoke words that made little or no sense -- "duckspeak" to use a term from George Orwell -- promising to make 5 million new jobs for Americans within weeks of being elected, bringing peace to America by making more war, to which the crowd cheered.

Barack Obama stood on the sidelines (this event was occuring on a football field) jumping up and down to be seen, shouting to be heard over the noise of the crowd, that what they claimed was impossible, couldn't the people see that they were tin soldiers? But no one listened -- they just admired the precision of the marching, how nicely the Republican candidates saluted with their foils. He seemed smaller for not carrying a weapon, diminished by the saber-rattling. I felt sad.

No one who is being given media attention is for actual Peace . . . that vast populace in the middle of America seems eager to devour and ravage other countries in the name of patriotism. They want out of Iraq, but for the wrong reasons: it costs too much at the pump. It costs too many American lives. No one seems to really want an end to the suffering.

I am choosing Barack Obama as the better of the available choices that has a reasonable chance to win: I learned in prior elections not to 'vote my conscience' and cause a large enough split to give the Republicans the edge. I don't particularly think the Democrats very much better; there is history of the same deal-making, the same choices that turn out poorly for the people and break promises. I think they are a little bit better, or, at least, I hope so. They did give us Social Security, Medicare, Headstart, and other social programs to help the people.

I hope my dreams of false saber-salutes is only a little nightmare that goes away, and doesn't come true.
I hope Senator Obama wins. I hope he can keep his promises..

Yes, and too often we've eaten sour grapes. Or hanging chads. It is appalling that people are STILL, in the 21st century, being kept from the voting booths on the basis of the color of their skin. It is horrible that the vote totals are messed with. All it takes is money in the right/wrong hands. Our real president was Al Gore -- he actually won the election. I wonder what the past 8 years would have looked like, what the world scene would have looked like, what Iraq would have looked like, had he been allowed to take his rightfully elected office. Would we even be at war? Would a million civilian Iraqi's be still alive? Would there be less pain, less hatred? Who knows... Rumors about a perverted elitist pseudo-Christian movement for the extremely powerful, claiming that they will inherit the earth, supposedly fuel the endless war effort. (recent book claims) Who knows ... What I **do** know is that I **don't** even know if my vote will be counted properly. We have fully electronic machines in my area, which is highly Republican. There is no way to cross-check, no paper tape, no print-out. A slight programming change and . . Poof! . . every other Democratic vote could be changed to a Republican one. This change could be done after the fact. There is no way to check, there is no money to check, there is no incentive to check. It is so sad to see that there is no way to have a reasonably accurate election, and that the President refused to have our elections overseen by outside agencies in 2004. I am sure there will be no oversight in 2008. We are so loud-mouthed about having oversight in other countries . . . it is why I am less than enthusiastic or hopeful about change, about something good happening in November. I guess I have seen too many elections, too many bad Presidencies. In retrospect, the only truly good one I have seen was President Jimmy Carter's . . .

Yes Ruach, and now, McCain has stolen Obama's thunder, he uses the catchphrases that we need "change" in Washington. Just to confuse the people. Who are confused by rhetoric, and can't tell the difference, anyway. Thanks for your comment.
