I just came on ipeace yesterday but was inspired by a fellow facebooker that was saying why is it called the anti war movement and not the pro peace movement? Well there is a big point in that it shouldn`t be just that we are against this and that but what are we actualy for.
Its not just enough to say your against bloodshed. Anyone in there right mind is against killing. But the true question is what is the alternative to: war, conflict, resource alocation or even the basics of life like who gets the water or food how will it be decided who the haves and have nots will be? The very question of why should there be have nots needs an answer. If we cannot say we are going to make a bigger pie then we fall into the us vs them mentality.
I am not a return to the past thinker longing for the good old days before modern technology. Those that picture it as having been a bowl of cheeries dont see the full picture. Does any one really want to work all there waking hrs just to make ends meet without any labor saving devices? I like creature comforts and refrigerators and computers. I like flush toilets and telaphones. I dont want to go back to chisels and stones. The point is how can we use technology wisly and effiecently to share the good things with everyone? To not say to the developing world we have ours and screw you but rather how can we rise the tide to float all our boats not just a few.
To me renewable clean energy sources that can be produced for the large part localy is part of the answer. Remember when the nuclear power promise was floated as the wave of the future . "limitless abundant cheap power that would cost next to nothing bringing on a new utopia". Well that didn`t pan out so well because it wasnt so safe or so clean but with green energy that promise can be revived.Afterall think about it for a moment once the infrastructure to produce green energy is produced it costs nothing but the maintenance . You dont pay for fuel bills ever again. There is no bill that the wind or sun or earth give you. I have no illusions that it will bring utopia but it would bring a lot of the reasons for going to war to an end.How often have wars been fought over resources of oil and coal? It could give energy resoursce poor nations an equalising position in regard to the "have" countries. Fresh water lacking countries with an abundant energy source could desaltanize water. Where possibilities dont exist for economic growth without energy resources a page could be turned where there can be posabilities.
One idea that facinates me is the ground source heat pump which basicaly like a refrigerator in reverse takes heat out of the ground and puts it into buildings and homes where its needed. The basic science is just a few meters into the ground the temperture stays an almost constant temperture. So the ground can be used for heating in winter when its warmer than the air and for cooling in summer when the ground is cooler than the air. This use of the ground can save up to 70 percent of the cost of cooling and heating! Now thats making progress. Make green power and then use it in a way that saves what would have been used thats winnning on top of winning!
Technology is basicaly putting humankinds brain up against problems and finding solutions so rather than be just against things lets rally to make our world a better place for all of us.
