Composition. Composite and PVC decking materials are manufactured boards rather than real wood. Most are composites, which contain a plastic binder combined with wood fibers, dust or flour. The PVC decking materials are 100% plastic and have a cellular foam material with an outer skin which contains the color and texture. Each technology is based on plastics, with their common limitations:
(1) these materials have a non-aesthetic filler core surrounded by a thin outer shell for color and texture.
(2) the stability of the product comes from the use of ultraviolet radiation (Wood plastic composite floor) stabilization chemicals. However, problems have been reported of the interior core destabilizing or delaminating.
(3) polymers are generally a soft material, and the outer surface can scratch, fade, or stain.
(4) retail cost of these materials can range from $4 to $10 per square foot. Performance Claims and Track Record. These materials are marketed as long-life low or no-maintenance decking options with long or lifetime warranties. Consumers need to review the warranty exclusions to assess these performance claims, as most warranties have an exclusion that says the company `does not warrant against and is not responsible for, and no implied warranty shall be deemed to cover, building railings for decks any condition attributable to: any environmental condition (such as air pollution, mold, mildew, etc.), staining from foreign substances (such as dirt, grease, oil, etc.), normal weathering (defined as exposure to sunlight, weather and atmosphere which will cause any colored surface to gradually fade, flake, chalk, or accumulate dirt or stains); variations or changes in color; or ordinary wear and tear.
