Today is Aung San Suu Kyi's 64th Birthday :)
Today, Aung San Suu Kyi turns 64 years old. She will spend this birthday in
Insein prison, as a prisoner of Than Shwe's military regime -- simply because
she has called for democracy and human rights for the people of Burma.
We and our colleagues throughout the world have been doing a ton of work to make
sure that she remains in the spotlight. Over 560 people signed up to host
events in their homes through our "Arrest Yourself" campaign!
If you were not able to host an event, we are asking you to make a special
donation of $64, $640 or $6,400 today to the U.S. Campaign for Burma in honor of
Aung San Suu Kyi, so that we can continue our work to advocate for her freedom,
and human rights for everyone in Burma.

This year, through our annual "Arrest Yourself" campaign,

over 560 people in every state and 46 countries around the world have pledged
to put themselves under self-imposed "house arrest" and to host educational
events in solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi.
On Moday, U.S. Campaign for Burma Executive Director Aung Din joined other
prominent democracy advocates from Burma to personally deliver a petition of
over 680,000 signatures calling for the release of all political prisoners,
including Aung San Suu Kyi, to Ibrahim Gambari, the UN Secretary-General's
special envoy to Buurma at UN headquarters in New York.
We helped recruit 112 former Presidents and Prime Ministers from throughout the
world to urge the UN Secretary General to travel to Burma to seek Suu Kyi's
release. While he initially resisted, in early May he changed his mind and said
he will go in the near future.
We are currently campaigning for the renewal of the Burmese Freedom and
Democracy Act, which includes targeted sanctions on Burma's ruthless leaders
that Aung San Suu Kyi has called for. We hope you will join this effort and take
a moment to call your Senators.

[ArrestYourself09] My Arrest Yourself Event in Virginia, and LA Times
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to wish everyone good luck on your "arrest yourself"
fundraisers... I'm having mine this weekend in Alexandria, Virginia and about 30
people are coming, so far. I'm making some Burmese food and will be showing the
videos that were sent to me. (I'm also making 'American' food since not all my
friends will eat the Burmese food. And, of course, beer always helps get people
to attend).
Also, I wanted to share this great opinion piece (below) in the LA Times about
Aung San Suu Kyi. It's inspiration for all of us!
If anyone has any last-minute tips on making my "arrest" and party successful,
let me know. I'm definitely going to raise the $300 by asking everyone to
contribute funds, and I'm trying for $2,000 (wish me luck).

Free Aung San Suu Kyi
Myanmar's military junta is once again trying to silence the opposition
activist by extending her house arrest.

The military junta that runs Myanmar has sought to silence its leading
critic by holding her under house arrest for 13 of the last 19 years. Yet
the longer Aung San Suu Kyi remains in detention, the more powerful she
becomes.
The generals first locked her away in 1990, but if they believed she would
fade from view, they were badly mistaken. The next year, she won the Nobel
Peace Prize. When a reporter visited in 1996, thousands of Burmese were
still flocking to her house on weekends to catch a glimpse of her. When
protests swept the country in 2007, the Buddhist monks who led the marches
pointedly linked their cause to hers bydirecting the crowds past her house.
How can a lone 63-year-old woman hidden away in an increasingly dilapidated
lakefront villa remain such a potent symbol? It's partly her pedigree: She
is the daughter of Aung San, a hero of Burmese independence who was
assassinated when she was a baby. It's partly her story: She returned to her
native country in 1988 to nurse her ailing mother after nearly three decades
living abroad, and within months emerged as its leading opposition figure.
More important, though, are her quiet dignity and endurance, and the
enormous sacrifices she has made for her cause. Among other things, she has
been separated for long periods from her two sons and was denied permission
to see her husband, British scholar Michael Aris, during the three years
before he died.
Other than the generals themselves, it's hard to imagine anyone who doesn't
look forward to the day when Suu Kyi is released. That's why it was so
disturbing when she was put on trial this week for violating the terms of
her house arrest.
The charges stem from a bizarre incident earlier this month in which a
53-year-old American man swam across Inya Lake and appeared, uninvited, in
Suu Kyi's garden. He was asked to leave, but when he complained of
exhaustion, he was permitted to stay overnight. While swimming away the next
day, he was arrested. The government appears to be using the incident as a
pretext for extending Suu Kyi's house arrest, which expires in a few days;
at the moment, however, she is being held on the grounds of Insein Prison,
facing a possible five-year prison term.
Our position on all this seems so obvious that it shouldn't need repeating:
Suu Kyi should never have been under house arrest in the first place for her
courageous activism on behalf of democracy. She should never have been
required to choose between her principles and her freedom, much less her
family.
Now the generals are trumping up new charges to silence her again. How long
can this go on? What will it take before they realize that this tactic will
not work, just as it hasn't worked for the last 19 years?
