Sharing Clarity # 6
By Diane L. Perretto

I Didn't Know I had it in Me!
The familiar phrase, "I didn't know I had it in me," shows a recognition of one who realized they possessed something because they were able to give it away. This points to the greater truth that "giving is receiving." We receive what it is we give away and by this we realize we had it all along!

The intangibles in our life such as patience, courage, kindness, tolerance, empathy and love are measurable and sometimes, in fear and doubt, we might wonder if we possess them and wish to feel them more for others as well. If you have given them away and have seen their effects upon another, you do possess them and you have found this out, by the giving of them. Therefore, you have received what you have given.

Yet, as we know, we can give things begrudgingly, or give something in order to get. We can do something we don't want to do. Therefore, giving must not be the only measure of what we have.

The measure of what we possess is not found in terms of how much or for how long but by our willingness to give.

"It is impossible not to have, but it is possible not to know you have. The recognition of having is the willingness for giving, and only by this willingness can you recognize what you have. What you give is therefore the value you put upon it. And this, in turn, is the measure of how much you want it."
ACIM T-9.II.11:6-9

What we give, whether it be a helping hand in recognition of a person's need for our time, or simply patience and encouragement, is given back to us by the measure of how much we value it. Do you value patience? Do you value encouragement? Do you value kindness? Do you value open mindedness? When you want to know these within yourself, you must give them away. By this, you will never find yourself without comfort.

This is because when you find it in your self to overlook an error even if another points out yours, or you encourage another with patience even when they have been impatient or rude, or if you are kind to a stranger and have empathy for an `enemy,' you are giving to the Holy Spirit and will recognize Him within yourself, by this giving.

Sometimes you may feel unsure just how to ask Spirit for strength to overlook errors or to do anything that seems difficult. Again, from A Course in Miracles, he explains how we ask of the Holy Spirit.

"You can ask of the Holy Spirit, then, only by giving to Him and you can give to Him only where you recognize Him. If you recognize Him in everyone, consider how much you will be asking of Him and how much you will receive." T-9.II.12

Ask and you will receive! And you will find yourself saying, "I didn't know I had it in me!"

Namaste ~
